Team serve receive per rotation
The full serve receive rotation is on the court and the ball is played out all the way through the attack. Only when that works does the rally count, and then the team moves on to the next rotation — that way you work through all six line-ups in a quarter of an hour.
Phase 1 of 7Full serve receive rotation; the server is ready with two balls

What you are training
Full serve receive rotation; pass-set-attack counts as a point, then rotate on.
- The whole chain of pass, set and attack in one go, instead of training serve receive on its own.
- Movement patterns per rotation: who passes, and who goes where afterwards.
- Working through all six line-ups, so the awkward rotations get covered too.
Coaching points
If you are not passing, you are already moving.
The players without a serve receive job decide whether there is an attack at all. Standing and watching the pass is why every team has one rotation that never runs smoothly.
The setter does not wait for the ball, the setter is already there.
A setter who only leaves once the pass is hanging in the air will always arrive late at the net in the difficult rotations.
Play every rotation out successfully three times before you move on.
One successful attempt says nothing about the movement patterns. Only with repetition do you see whether the system holds up or whether it was luck.
For each rotation, name who takes the seam.
Every rotation has a weak spot. Assigning it in advance wins you more points than better passing technique.
Variations
- Easier
- The attack only has to go over the net and the server serves from the three-meter line.
- Harder
- Put two blockers on the other side, so the hitter also has to choose between the line and the cross.
- With six players
- Play without a libero and have the setter get the next ball ready straight after the attack.
- As a game
- Three successful rallies per rotation to be allowed through. If that does not happen within five balls, the team stays where it is.
