Handing over to a new coach: everything is already in place

Every summer, thousands of teams watch knowledge evaporate: the departing coach takes three seasons of insight away in their head, and the new one starts with a list of names. It can be different — if the team, not the coach, owns the knowledge.

What normally gets lost

Not the names — those are everywhere. What does get lost: who can hold their own in a second position, why number 12 nearly quit in November, which drills carry this team, what happens to attendance after a losing streak. The soft knowledge, built up over hundreds of practices — traditionally stored in the least transferable place there is: the head of the departing coach.

The handover that wrote itself

A coach who kept records all season already has their handover file. With the team account, the successor receives in one go: the player profiles with positions and dual roles, the notes per player, the multi-year development data, the complete drill library and the match archive. What normally takes three months of settling in is now three evenings of reading.

The team account is the handover: profiles, history and library simply change administrator.

The handover conversation: the final ten percent

Data transfers the facts; one good conversation transfers the meaning. Agenda for ninety minutes: walk through the player profiles together ("this is what you see in the numbers — this is the story behind it"), share the three lessons from the season evaluation, and point out the sensitivities you deliberately didn't write down. After that it's theirs — including the right to do everything differently.

Prepare the handover as if it happens every year. Even if you're staying: a team organised to be transferable is simply a well-organised team. The coach who gets hit by a bus tomorrow is a thought experiment that improves every admin setup.

Frequently asked questions

Should the old coach share their notes with the successor?

Professional observations: yes, that's the heart of the handover. Personal sensitivities you share verbally and in measured doses — and anything you wrote back then 'as if the player were reading along' is by definition shareable.

What if the departing coach didn't track anything?

Then the conversation is everything: plan two sessions and work through the roster systematically while the successor takes notes — in the system they themselves will carry on with, so the next departure no longer means knowledge loss.

How do I hand over the team account technically?

The new coach is added to the team as a trainer and given admin rights; the departing coach then unlinks. Team, data and library remain — which is exactly the point of team ownership.
