Assigning and managing jersey numbers in your roster

The jersey number is the first thing you see in the heat of a match — not the face. Pick your numbers smartly and keep them tight, and you score faster in the admin and on the stat-entry screen alike.

The rules: what is actually allowed?

In most national competitions, jersey numbers 1 through 99 are allowed, and every number within a team must be unique. The libero must be recognisable by a contrasting shirt, but keeps a regular number of their own. On the match form — digital or paper — the number must match the shirt. Sounds obvious, yet it goes wrong somewhere every season.

Smart numbering prevents mistakes

• Low numbers for your core group. Numbers 1 through 12 are instantly recognisable on any screen or form.
• The number follows the player, not the position. If you move someone to a different position, keep the number — that keeps statistics comparable across seasons.
• Do not reserve numbers. Honouring a departed player with an empty number is sympathetic, but with 14 players and 12 shirts it is mostly impractical.
