Volleyball rotation generator

How to read the rotations
Positions in volleyball are numbered I to VI, counter-clockwise from the serving spot. The court is drawn from your own side, with the net at the top:

The player in position I serves. When your team wins the serve back from the opponent, everyone moves one spot clockwise and the player who was in II serves next. Over a set, every player passes through all six positions in the same fixed rotation order, the one you wrote on your lineup sheet.
The cards are numbered in the order you play them, starting from your lineup. Many US coaches name a rotation after the setter's position instead, so "rotation 6" means the setter is in 6. The label on each card, such as "S in VI", shows that position.
The standard order for each system
Who follows whom never changes during a set. The generator uses the order most teams play:
- 5-1: setter, outside hitter, middle blocker, opposite, outside hitter, middle blocker. The opposite lines up across from the setter, and the two outsides and the two middles are opposite each other too. With the setter in the back row you have three hitters at the net, with the setter in the front row two. More in the 5-1 system in detail.
- 4-2: two setters opposite each other, in the setter and opposite spots. The setter in the front row sets, so you always have two hitters at the net. See the 4-2 system in detail.
- 6-2: the same lineup as a 4-2, but the setter in the back row sets. They penetrate to the net while the front-row setter hits, so you always have three hitters at the net. See the 6-2 system.
Want to start in a different rotation, for example to open with your best server? Pick another player under "Who starts in position I?". The order stays the same; only the starting point moves.
The libero in the rotation
The libero replaces a middle blocker in the back row, and in this generator only in positions V and VI. It is the same rule the Koach app uses:
- When a middle rotates to V or VI, the libero takes their place.
- When that middle reaches I, they serve themselves. Under FIVB rules the libero may not serve.
- When they rotate on to the front row, the other middle is in the back row by then, and the libero plays for them.
That puts the libero on the court in four of the six rotations. Each card shows the moment your team serves. If you lose that serve, the libero may replace the middle in position I, and many teams do exactly that. USA Volleyball and NCAA rules let the libero serve in one rotation per set, so check what your league allows. The exchange itself is covered in exchanging the libero.

Frequently asked questions
Is the rotation generator free?
Yes. No account and no email address, and nothing is sent to a server: what you enter stays in your own browser.
Does it work without a libero?
Yes. Untick "Use a libero" and both middle blockers stay on the court in all six rotations.
Who sets in a 4-2 and in a 6-2?
In a 4-2 the setter in the front row, in a 6-2 the setter in the back row. Every card says who is setting, and that name is underlined.
Does it show serve receive or overlap?
It shows each player's base position at the moment of the serve. It does not draw serve-receive formations or stacking. The positional rules per rotation are in preventing positional faults.
