Rotation order in volleyball: how it works

"Are we supposed to rotate now?" Every sports hall hears that question weekly. The rotation rules are simpler than their reputation — if you grab hold of two principles and let the rest follow.

Reading time: 5 min

Principle 1: you only rotate when winning back the serve

The team that wins a point while the opponent was serving rotates one position clockwise and then serves. Win a point on your own serve, and everyone stays put and the same player serves again. That is the entire rule — everything else follows from it.

Principle 2: the order is fixed, the positions are temporary

Your starting lineup determines the relative order for the whole set: whoever starts to your right will always serve 'after you' in the rotation. Within the rally everyone may move freely after the serve (setters penetrate, the libero appears in the back row), but at the moment of the serve everyone must stand in the correct order — otherwise it is a positional fault.

Live match screen in the Koach app with the current lineup and serve indicator
The app rotates the lineup automatically on every side-out — the screen always shows who belongs where.

Where it goes wrong (and how to prevent it)

Anyone who tracks the match live in Koach does not have this problem, by the way: the app rotates automatically with the serving turns, so the current lineup on screen is always correct.

Mnemonic for the direction: the player at right back (position 1) serves, and 'everyone shifts one chair towards the serving spot'. Clockwise, in other words — always, at every level, in every hall.

Frequently asked questions

Do you also rotate in the deciding fifth set?

Yes, the rotation rules are the same in every set. Only in the fifth set do the teams switch sides at 8 points — you simply carry the rotation state with you.

May I change my lineup between sets?

Yes. Before each set you submit a new starting lineup; the order may then be completely different. Within a set the order is fixed and can only change through substitutions.

Does the libero count in the rotation order?

The libero takes over the rotation spot of the player they replace, but never rotates into the front row: just before 'their' position reaches the front, the original player switches back in.
