Tracking set scores and sets won
"How did you play?" — "Won 3-1." Fine answer for the canteen, thin for a coach. The set scores underneath tell the real story: where it turned, what it cost and what the next training goal is.
Sets counted automatically
If you score per rally in Koach, you never administer sets separately: at 25 (win by two) the set closes, the score moves to the set line at the top and the next set starts at 0-0. Above the scoreboard you can permanently read the standing in sets plus the results of the sets played — Sets: 25-21 · 23-25 — exactly what you want to see at a glance during a time-out.
Reading set scores as a coach
- The margin per set: four sets at 25-22 is a different battle than 25-15, 15-25, 25-23, 26-24. Small margins point to the big points — and who made those is in the player statistics.
- The trend across sets: starting strong and fading (25-18, 25-22, 20-25, 21-25) is a conditioning or mental signal; growing the other way is a compliment to your adjustments.
- The recurring dip: if you structurally lose set two, that is a pattern to investigate — rotation choice, substitution policy or simply second-set concentration.
From set score to season pattern
One match is a story, ten matches are a profile. Because every match is stored with its set scores in the match overview, half a season in you see what kind of team you are: a team of 3-0s and 0-3s (all or nothing) or a five-set machine. That profile steers your training — a team that always goes five sets trains conditioning; an all-or-nothing team trains the start.
Celebrate the set win on its own. Especially with young teams: taking a set off a stronger team is measurable progress, even in a 1-3 loss. The set scores make that growth visible where the result hides it.
Frequently asked questions
When is a set officially won?
At 25 points with a minimum lead of two (15 in the deciding fifth set). At 24-24 play continues until the gap is two — and the app only closes the set at that moment.
Can I review how the score developed within a set?
Yes — every recorded point builds up the set progression, so afterwards you can see where a lead melted away or a run began. See the article on reading back the score progression.
Do set scores count in the league standings?
In many leagues they do: points are awarded per set won. A 3-2 win then yields less than 3-0 — one more reason to take lost sets seriously in your analysis.
