Side-out percentage: the most important team stat explained
Ask a top coach for the most important number of a match and the answer is almost never 'the final score'. It is the side-out: how often you win the rally when the opponent serves. Master your side-out and you rarely lose.
What exactly is side-out?
Side-out is the point you score while the opponent serves — you 'take over the serve'. In the rally-point system every rally is a point, so you play half of all rallies in side-out. A team that consistently converts its own serve receive stays alive in every set.
Why it says more than the final score
A set of 25-20 can be two very different stories. If you won 70% of your side-outs, you played a strong, stable set. If you won only 45% and your points came mostly from aces and blocks, you got lucky — and that does not last. Side-out shows whether your system works: pass, set and attack as a chain.
Side-out per rotation: where it gets really interesting
The team average is a starting point; the gain is in the breakdown per rotation. Almost every team has one rotation that gets stuck — often the one with the weakest passer in serve receive or an awkward attacking distribution. If you see that one rotation at 40% while the rest runs above 60%, you know exactly what to work on in practice.
How to read it in Koach
During live scoring, Koach automatically tracks who served and calculates your side-out per rotation afterwards. No separate counting: it follows from the points you register anyway. In the review you then have a concrete handle instead of a gut feeling.
Link side-out to your pass. A low side-out in a rotation almost always comes from the reception. Put the pass ratings of that rotation next to it and you instantly see whether it is the pass, the set or the attack.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good side-out percentage?
At amateur level 55-60% is a healthy average; that keeps every set in balance. Top teams are around 65-70%. More important than the exact figure is the spread: no single rotation should lag far behind.
What is the difference between side-out and point-scoring?
Side-out is scoring while the opponent serves; point-scoring (or 'break point') is scoring on your own serve. Together they make up all points. Side-out is usually the highest and most decisive, because you play half the rallies in side-out.
Do I have to track side-out myself?
In Koach, no: the app derives it from who served and whether you won the rally, and shows it per rotation after the match. You only need to score live as usual.
