Best volleyball rotation apps: six options, honestly compared
The short answer
The best volleyball rotation app depends on what you need. For detail on every rotation, Volleyball Rotations is strong: serve receive per rotation, an overlap check and rotations that follow the match. If you want rotations, a libero that swaps automatically and your practices in one app, Koach is the better fit.
Search for the best volleyball rotation apps and you will find two kinds: apps that mainly let you draw, and apps that also rotate with you during the match. Which one fits depends on the problem you want to solve. Below we put four other apps, our free rotation generator and Koach side by side, with what each one does well.
What should a volleyball rotation app do?
Every rotation app lets you place six players and shows how they rotate. After that, they go separate ways. So check six things before you choose:
- Your system. Does the app know your 5-1, 4-2 or 6-2, with or without a libero? Some apps cover more systems, such as the 6-3 or the 6-6.
- All six rotations at once. Not just the starting lineup, but who serves and who is in the front row in each rotation.
- Serve receive and overlap. Do you want to draw your serve receive formation for every rotation and have the app check that nobody overlaps? That is a different kind of app from one that only shows base positions.
- The libero. Does the app know that the libero replaces a middle in the back row, and when the libero has to leave the court again?
- Following the match. A rotation on paper does not rotate. An app that also keeps score shows who should be where the moment you win back the serve.
- Learning from your rotations. After a few matches you want to know which rotation gives away the most points. Only an app that also keeps stats can tell you that.
Then come the usual questions: does it run on your phone or tablet, and what does it cost? If you want to look beyond rotations, use our checklist for choosing a volleyball app.

Try your rotations in KoachThe best volleyball rotation apps side by side
We make Koach, so read this comparison as the work of the maker of one of the six options. That is why the table below only lists what the makers themselves say on their websites, in the App Store or on Google Play, checked in October 2026, and why every option gets credit for what it does well. "Not stated" means the maker says nothing about it, not that the app cannot do it.

Volleyball Rotations: every rotation down to the detail
Volleyball Rotations by Refactor Media has been in the App Store since October 2018 and was still being updated in September 2026. You start from a template for a 4-2, 5-1 (with or without libero), 6-2, 6-3 or 6-6 and build up to six rotations per lineup. Its strongest point: for each rotation you set separate positions for serve receive, attack, serve and defense, and the app checks for overlap. The rotation also follows the match: according to the website, a side-out advances the rotation automatically and the scoreboard keeps itself up to date. You track stats per player, with an overview of points per rotation, and players get read-only access to your plan with a key.
According to the website, the app runs on iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, Macs with Apple silicon and ChromeOS. The App Store lists English as its only language, and on Google Play it has 5,000+ downloads. Choose Volleyball Rotations if you want to map out your system all the way down to serve receive, have it follow the match and share it with your players. Koach does not draw a serve receive formation per rotation.
Rotate123: rotations and overlap in the browser
Rotate123 is a simple web app: a visual lineup generator for the 5-1, 6-2, 4-2 and 6-1. It corrects overlap as you work, and diagrams explain each lineup. There is nothing to install. The homepage lists no price and no languages. Rotate123 is strong when you want to check quickly in the browser whether a lineup stays within the overlap rules, for example to walk your team through it.
Rotaciones Voleibol, Coach Tactic Board and the free generator
Rotaciones Voleibol
Rotaciones Voleibol has been in the App Store since March 2025. You set up rotation and serve receive systems, the app checks for positional faults automatically, and you can add tactical notes. It is free, runs on iPhone and iPad and comes in six languages: English, French, German, Japanese, Chinese and Spanish. The latest update is from March 2026. A good free pick if you want to check your serve receive on an iPhone or iPad.
Coach Tactic Board: Volley
Coach Tactic Board: Volley is not a rotation app but a tactics whiteboard. You place players, create animated game situations and drills, and save unlimited tactics. That also lets you sketch a rotation or a serve receive pattern; the description does not mention keeping track of whose turn it is during a match. The app has been around since 2014, is available in 26 languages according to the App Store and has 100,000+ downloads on Google Play. It is free, with ads on Android, and you buy Coach Pro in the app. Strong if you mainly want to explain. More whiteboard apps are in our comparison of tactics board apps.
Koach's free rotation generator
If all you need is the six rotations on paper, the free rotation generator is enough. You pick a 5-1, 4-2 or 6-2, enter names or jersey numbers and see all six rotations, with the libero in positions V and VI if you switch it on. You print them with a blank lineup sheet, no account needed. It does not draw serve receive formations, and a printed sheet does not rotate during the match.
Koach: rotations, libero and match in one app
Koach is not a standalone drawing board but an app for volleyball coaches, where the same lineup comes back in the match and in your stats. You set up your lineup once in the Lineup view: pick a 5-1, 4-2 or 6-2, assign the setter and the libero, and with View all 6 rotations you see who stands where in each rotation. A step-by-step walkthrough is in our guide to the volleyball lineup app.
During the match your lineup rotates with you, just as in Volleyball Rotations. The live screen shows the Serve order as a row of jersey numbers and the Current lineup, which rotates as soon as you win back the serve. Koach also handles the libero for you: with Swap libero automatically, the libero comes in for the middle in the back row and goes out as soon as that middle rotates to the front row or comes up to serve. That works with two liberos too. What the app tracks during the match is explained in our article on the rotation app.
Then you learn from your rotations. When you start a match and between sets, the Rotation check gives you insights from your scored matches: in how many rotations your two strongest attackers are in the front row together, where your best server falls in the serving order, and which rotation is the weakest. After the match you find Side-out per rotation with that match: for each rotation, how many rallies you won on the opponent's serve. That shows you exactly where you are leaving points on the table. More about the check is in our article on the rotation check.

When Koach is not the best choice
- You want to draw serve receive formations. In Koach you place players in rotation order, with position 1 as the serving spot, and the app says so itself: "This is not your reception formation." You cannot save a serve receive, attack or defense formation per rotation; on the Koach tactics board you can only draw one on an empty court, separate from your rotations. Choose Volleyball Rotations or Rotaciones Voleibol instead.
- You want an overlap check. Koach warns you when the libero is in the front row or in the serving spot, but it does not check for overlap between players.
- You play a 6-3, a 6-6, mini volleyball or beach. Koach knows the 5-1 (also without a libero), the 4-2 and the 6-2, and works with six players indoors.
- You only want rotations, for free. Koach has no free plan: you try the app free for 14 days and then choose a subscription. For rotations alone, the free generator is enough.
Which is the best volleyball rotation app for you?
- Drawing serve receive, attack and defense per rotation, following the match and sharing it with your players: Volleyball Rotations.
- Checking a lineup for overlap quickly in the browser: Rotate123.
- Checking your serve receive for free on an iPhone or iPad: Rotaciones Voleibol.
- Mostly drawing and explaining, in 26 languages: Coach Tactic Board.
- Just the rotations on paper: the free rotation generator.
- A rotation that follows the match, a libero who swaps automatically and side-out per rotation afterwards: Koach, with practices, attendance and stats in the same app.
You can also combine them: draw your serve receive in a whiteboard app and score the match in Koach. If you are looking beyond rotations, you will find more apps in our comparison of volleyball apps.
How much does a volleyball rotation app cost?
Rotaciones Voleibol and Coach Tactic Board are free to download. In Coach Tactic Board you buy Coach Pro in the app; the US App Store lists, among others, Coach Pro for $4.99, Coach Pro Monthly for $2.99 and Coach Pro Yearly for $19.99. Volleyball Rotations is free to download and comes with a seven-day trial; after that the US App Store lists Coach Monthly for $6.99, Coach Yearly for $69.99, Lifetime Coach Access for $149.99 and Player Access for $9.99. According to the website, schools and clubs can get a license paid by invoice. Rotate123 lists no price. All prices were checked in October 2026.
You can try Koach free for 14 days, with no credit card and every feature included. After that you choose Coach for €2.99 per month (one team, two coaches) or Club for €9.99 per month (unlimited teams). With a yearly plan you pay €2.49 or €8.33 per month. Players and parents use Koach for free. The prices are on the pricing page; in the App Store and on Google Play you see the price in your own currency.
Put your rotations next to your numbers. By all means draw your serve receive in a whiteboard app, but after a few scored matches, check which rotation loses the most rallies on the opponent's serve. Start your next practice there, not with a new drawing.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free volleyball rotation app?
That depends on what you need. Rotaciones Voleibol is free in the App Store and checks your serve receive for positional faults. Coach Tactic Board is free to download, with Coach Pro as an in-app purchase. Volleyball Rotations has a free seven-day trial and then a subscription or one-time purchase (checked in October 2026). Koach's rotation generator is free and needs no account. The Koach app itself is free to try for 14 days, no credit card; after that Coach costs €2.99 per month for one team.
Is there a volleyball rotation app for iPad?
Yes, several. According to the App Store, Volleyball Rotations, Rotaciones Voleibol and Coach Tactic Board run on iPhone and iPad. Rotate123 is a web app you open in the browser, so it works on an iPad too. Koach runs on iPhone, iPad and Android with the same app and the same account, and in the browser as well. That way your lineup and serve order come with you to the gym just as easily on an iPad.
Does a volleyball rotation app check for overlap?
Some do. Volleyball Rotations has an overlap check, Rotate123 corrects overlap as you work, and Rotaciones Voleibol checks for positional faults automatically. Koach does not: you place your players in rotation order, and the app only warns you when the libero is in the front row or in the serving spot. To learn the overlap rules yourself, read our guide to avoiding overlap faults.
Can a volleyball rotation app swap the libero automatically?
Koach can. Turn on Swap libero automatically and the libero comes in for the middle in the back row and goes out as soon as that middle rotates to the front row or comes up to serve. A team with two liberos can switch between them. Volleyball Rotations has templates for a 5-1 with or without a libero; whether the libero swaps on its own during a match is not stated on its website. In the free generator the libero comes in at positions V and VI.
What's the difference between a rotation app and a tactics board?
A tactics board, such as Coach Tactic Board, is a blank court where you place players and draw or animate game situations. A rotation app knows your system and shows how your six players rotate; some also check for overlap. Koach does a bit of both: you draw on Koach's own tactics board for a match, and your lineup rotates with the score on the live screen.
Let your rotations keep up with the match
