Evaluating the practice season with attendance and effort data

In May you still remember exactly how the last practice felt — but not what February was like. If you want to evaluate the season on more than a feeling, you need data. Luckily, you have been collecting it all year.

Reading time: 5 min

The three questions of a practice evaluation

  1. Did they come? Attendance per month and per player — the foundation.
  2. Did they engage? The effort scores across the season, as a team and per player.
  3. Did it get better? The link between what you trained and what the matches showed.

How to read the attendance data

Do not look at the yearly average but at the trajectory. Attendance sliding from 85% in September to 65% in March tells a story about practice quality, season fatigue or both. Compare days too: if Thursday is structurally fuller than Tuesday, that is usable information for planning next season. The practice overview per player shows attendance and average effort side by side.

From data to plan

An evaluation without consequences is just a look back. Translate every finding into one decision: repeat the focus more often (if themes switched too fast), rework Tuesdays (if turnout structurally lags there), more game play (if effort scores were lower on technique nights). Three decisions are enough — and record them somewhere you will find them next season.

Evaluate with the team too. Present three striking numbers ('our turnout dropped 15% after the winter break') and ask for explanations instead of filling them in yourself. The best analyses come from the locker room.

Frequently asked questions

When do I schedule the practice evaluation?

Within two weeks of the last match: the season is complete, the memory fresh and the conclusions land before everyone scatters. Combine it with the team's season review.

Which numbers matter most if I am short on time?

Two: the attendance trajectory per month (the collective trend) and the five biggest effort risers or fallers (the individual stories). Those capture ninety percent of the picture.

What if the data is missing because I started logging late?

Evaluate the period you do have and note as your first improvement: log from day one. Half a season of data is already far more than most teams ever have.
