Free volleyball apps for coaches: what is really free?
The short answer
Most free volleyball apps do one job: keeping score, showing rotations, drawing plays or organizing your team, often with ads, in-app purchases or a free trial. You can try Koach free for 14 days; the rotation generator, 200 drills and 10 practice plans on our site are free, with no account.
There are plenty of free volleyball apps: a scoreboard, a rotation chart, a tactics board or a team app. But free does not mean the same thing for every app. Below you'll find, for each type of app, what you really get without paying, where the catch is, and which Koach tools you can use for free without an account.
What to look for in free volleyball apps
Search the App Store or Google Play for a free volleyball app and you get scoreboards, rotation charts, tactics boards and team apps all mixed together. Almost all of them are free to download, but that says little about what you can actually do for free. So look at four things:
- What the app really does. Most free apps do one thing well: keep the score, draw a lineup or organize the group. That is fine, as long as you know which thing you are looking for.
- Where the catch is. On Google Play a listing shows whether the app contains ads and whether it offers in-app purchases. In the App Store the in-app purchases are listed with their prices in the app's information section. And an app with a free trial is free until the trial ends.
- Whether the app knows volleyball. A scoreboard for any sport counts points. A volleyball app also knows who is serving, how your team rotates and where the libero comes in.
- Who pays. Sometimes an app is free for the coach and parents or fans pay, sometimes it is the other way round. If you put your whole team in an app, also check what it costs your players and their families.
Free volleyball apps by type: the overview
We make Koach. So read this as an overview written by a maker who also sells an app: below are only facts from the App Store, Google Play and the makers' own websites, with a link to the source, and for every app what it does well.
Checked in October 2026 in the App Store, on Google Play and on the makers' websites. Dollar prices are from the US App Store; in the UK or elsewhere your store shows the price in your own currency.
| App | What it is | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Volley Scoreboard | Scoreboard with time-outs, rotations and substitutions | Free in the App Store, for iPhone and iPad |
| Rotate123 | Rotations and lineups in the browser | No price listed on the homepage |
| Volleyball Rotations | Lineups, rotations and live stats | One week free, then a subscription or a one-time purchase |
| Coach Tactic Board: Volley | Tactics board for plays and drills | Free to download; contains ads on Google Play; Coach Pro is an in-app purchase |
| GameChanger | Scoring for many sports, volleyball included | Free in the US App Store, with in-app purchases; not found outside the US |
| Spond | Team app for any sport | Free in the App Store |
| Koach | Volleyball app for coaches: lineup, live scoring, practices and attendance | 14 days free with no credit card, then Coach at €2.99 per month; players and parents free |
Stats apps are left out of this table on purpose. You can track stats for free too, for example with VolleyInsights, which according to the App Store has no ads, no subscriptions and no premium tier; what else you can do for free is covered in our guide to a free volleyball stats app.
Free volleyball scoreboard apps: score, time-outs and substitutions
If all you want is to keep the score, a scoreboard app is enough, and those are often free. Volley Scoreboard is a free app in the App Store for iPhone and iPad. According to the listing, it tracks the score, time-outs, rotations and the lineup with substitutions, and it is available in twenty languages. That is more than a plain scoreboard.
GameChanger, an app for scoring games in many sports, volleyball among them, is also free to download in the US App Store, with in-app purchases, and according to its own volleyball page it is free for coaches. Outside the United States we did not find it: not in the App Store in the UK, nor in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Italy or Poland (checked in October 2026). Who does pay, and what a volleyball coach misses, is covered in our guide to the GameChanger volleyball app.
A scoreboard counts points for two teams. Looking for a free volleyball score keeper app that also tells you who scored your points, and how? Then you need an app that scores per player. In Koach, after every point your team wins, you tap who scored and how: Attack, Block, Serve / Ace or Opponent error. Meanwhile the app keeps track of the serve order, counts your time-outs and substitutions per set, and rotates the lineup when your team wins the serve back. More on the difference between a score counter and an app is in keeping volleyball score with a scoreboard app.
Free volleyball lineup app? Use the rotation generator
If you are looking for a free volleyball lineup app, here is the honest answer: the Koach app is not one, because as a coach you pay after 14 days. What is free, with no account, is the volleyball rotation generator on our site. You pick a 5-1, 4-2 or 6-2, enter names or jersey numbers and see all six rotations at once: who serves, who is in the front row and where the libero comes in. The print button gives you the rotation sheet plus a blank lineup sheet for five sets, on A4 or US Letter, and if you want a PDF, choose Save as PDF in the print dialog.
There are more options. Rotate123 is a simple web app that shows lineups for the 5-1, 6-2, 4-2 and 6-1, corrects overlap faults on the spot and adds explanation diagrams; there is no price on the homepage. Volleyball Rotations goes further: templates for the 4-2, 5-1, 6-2, 6-3 and 6-6, separate positions for passing, attacking, serving and defense, an overlap check and live stats, and players can follow along with read-only access. According to its website you can try it free for a week; after that you choose a subscription or a one-time purchase. In the US App Store Coach costs $6.99 a month, $69.99 a year or $149.99 one-time, and there is also Player Access for $9.99.
If you mainly want a whiteboard to explain things, Coach Tactic Board: Volley is free to download. You use it to build animated game situations and drills. On Google Play the listing says the app contains ads, and with Coach Pro you buy extras in the app, in the US App Store for example for $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year.
The difference from an app that rotates with the match: a printed sheet is your lineup from before the match. After the first substitution it is already out of date. In Koach you set up your lineup with your own players, pick your setter and libero, check every rotation with View all 6 rotations and take that lineup into the live screen. How that works is explained in the volleyball lineup app.
14 days free, no credit card. Got your rotations from the generator? Put them in the app and see at your next match whether the lineup keeps up with the match without a cheat sheet.
Try Koach with your own teamFree team apps: organizing without paying
For the schedule, RSVPs and messages there are free team apps that work for any sport. Spond calls itself a free app in the App Store, for scheduling training and matches and collecting payments, and it is available in 24 languages. It is strong if you want to organize a group, in any sport. What Spond does and does not do for a volleyball team is covered in our Spond alternative guide.
Koach has that organizing built in too: a Schedule, sign-ups for every session and match, Announcements and a Driving rota (a carpool schedule) for away matches. The difference is that it sits in the same app as your lineup and your match stats, so you see who was at practice next to who played.
What you get from Koach for free
Koach is a paid app for coaches, but part of what we make is free: three tools on our site that you use without an account, and an account of their own for players and parents.
- The rotation generator. All six rotations for a 5-1, 4-2 or 6-2 and a blank lineup sheet to print, with no account.
- 200 animated drills. In the volleyball drills every drill has an animation for each phase, coaching points and variations. You filter by category and by number of players, and you do not need an account.
- 10 practice plans. The practice plans cover youth and adult teams, from 8 to 28 weeks, each as a PDF to print.
- The player and parent account. Anyone who belongs to a team as a player or parent pays nothing. Players see their schedule and their own stats and sign up or out; parents do that for their child. A second coach on the team of a paying coach also coaches for free.
When is free enough, and when is it not?
Free is enough when you want to solve one thing:
- You only want the score on a screen. A free scoreboard app does that.
- You want your rotations on paper. The rotation generator asks for no account and no money.
- You are looking for drills. The drills and the practice plans on our site cost nothing.
- You mostly organize. A free team app handles the schedule and the RSVPs.
Paying is worth it when those separate pieces need to come together: the lineup you set up on Tuesday is the same one that rotates with your team on match day, the points you tap in live end up with the player, and attendance sits next to playing time. That is what Koach does. You try it free for 14 days, with no credit card, and after that Coach costs €2.99 per month; in the App Store and on Google Play you pay the store's price in your own currency. The amounts are on the pricing page, and how the subscription works is explained in what Koach costs.
Koach is not for everyone. If you want an app that stays free for the coach, Koach is not it: there is no free coach version after the trial. If you want parents to follow the score live on their own phones, Koach cannot do that; VolleyInsights offers a public link to a live scoreboard for that, according to its own website. And if you play beach volleyball, Koach is no use to you: the app is built for indoor volleyball with six players. Not sure which app fits you? Use the checklist for choosing a volleyball app or the broader comparison of volleyball apps.
Start free, and see what you miss. Print your rotations from the generator and take them to your next match. If the sheet no longer matches after three substitutions, you know exactly where an app saves you time.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a free volleyball app for coaches?
Yes, for single tasks. There are free scoreboard apps, tactics boards and team apps, often with ads or paid extras inside the app. If you want one app for your lineup, live scoring, practices and attendance, look closely at the free trial and the in-app purchases. You can try Koach free for 14 days, with no credit card. The rotation generator, the 200 drills and the 10 practice plans on our site are free to use, with no account.

The Koach volleyball rotation generator is free and needs no account: you pick a 5-1, 4-2 or 6-2, enter names or jersey numbers and print all six rotations with a blank lineup sheet. Rotate123 shows rotations in the browser for the 5-1 and 6-2, among others, but lists no price on its homepage. Volleyball Rotations offers a one-week free trial (checked in October 2026). If you want the lineup to rotate with your team during the match, you can try the Koach app free for 14 days.
Is Koach free?
For players and parents, yes: they use their own account without paying. A coach can try Koach free for 14 days, with every feature and no credit card. After that Coach costs €2.99 per month; there is no free coach version that stays after the trial. What Coach and Club cost exactly is explained in what Koach costs.
What is a good free volleyball scoreboard app?
If you only need the score, a free scoreboard app is enough, such as Volley Scoreboard in the App Store, which according to its listing also tracks time-outs, rotations and substitutions (checked in October 2026). If you also want to know who scored your points and how, you need an app that scores per player. In Koach you tap the player and the type of point after every point your team wins; you can try that free for 14 days.
Why pay for a volleyball app when there are free ones?
Because separate free apps each do one piece: the scoreboard counts points, the rotation chart sits on paper and the team app handles the schedule. Paying is worth it when you want those pieces to come together: a lineup that rotates with the match, points per player and attendance next to playing time. If you only need one of those things, a free app or the free rotation generator is often enough.
Start your 14-day free trial with your own team
