Hudl alternative for volleyball: live stats without a camera
The short answer
If you want a Hudl alternative for volleyball because you don't film, you need stats and team management without a camera. Koach tracks who scored and how, live and per player, shows side-out per rotation and momentum, and runs your schedule and attendance. Koach doesn't do video; that is where Hudl remains stronger.
You want a Hudl alternative for volleyball because you want numbers and an overview of your team, but you have no camera, no video subscription and no analyst. Hudl is built around video; your question is a different one. Here is an honest look at what Hudl offers for volleyball, what it costs and what Koach does without a camera.
Checked in October 2026 on Hudl's volleyball page, Hudl's product and pricing pages, in the App Store and on Google Play.
Full disclosure: we make Koach. So read this as a comparison written by the maker of one of the two. That is also why you will find below what Hudl does better and who Hudl remains the better choice for.
Why coaches look for a Hudl alternative for volleyball
Hudl is built around video first. Almost everything it offers for volleyball starts with a recording: a camera films the match, and then software or analysts pull stats and clips out of that footage. For a team with a fixed camera in the gym and someone who actually watches the film, that works well.
Many club, high school and youth coaches do not have that camera, or it sits on a tripod and the recording stays unwatched on a phone afterwards. What you want to know on match day is simpler: who scored, in which rotation did you leak points, and who was at practice on Tuesday? You do not need a video subscription for that. You do need this:
- Stats per player, live from the sideline. One person taps who scored each point and how, so nobody has to go through film afterwards.
- Insight per rotation and into the flow of the match. In which rotation do you win back the serve, and where did the set turn?
- Something to share afterwards. A final score or a standout player for the team group chat or the club's page, without any editing.
- Your team in the same app. Schedule, attendance and practices next to the match stats, so you are not keeping three apps up to date.
- A price you can see up front. No quote and no sales call.
14 days free, no credit card. Score your next match and see after the last point in which rotation you leaked points.
Try Koach without a cameraWhat Hudl offers for volleyball
On Hudl's volleyball page you find products for clubs, high schools, colleges and pro teams (checked in October 2026). For a coach, these are the main ones:
- Hudl Assist. Hudl produces team and player stats and reports for you, tied to the video of your match. No price is listed; you sign up through a form.
- Volleymetrics. Analysts log every ball contact on both sides of the net within 12 hours. It is aimed at college and pro teams; you request a demo, and no price is listed here either.
- Balltime. Hudl now runs Balltime as its own product: you upload a volleyball video and the software tags every ball contact and every player, cuts out the dead time and turns it into highlights. More on that in the Balltime alternative.
- Cameras and video software. On top of that you find the Focus cameras, Sportscode, Replay and Hudl TV, among others.
- For the organization. Hudl also lists Messaging, a communication app for the whole organization, and Registration for forms, fees and managing your roster.
Where Hudl is strong: it has been in the App Store since 2011, has more than a million downloads on Google Play, and it links video and stats in a way Koach does not attempt. If you want to rewatch every rally in your film session, Hudl is a mature package. According to the App Store, the app is available in English, French, Japanese and Portuguese. Koach is young: it has been in the App Store since July 2026.

So Hudl and Koach rarely compete for exactly the same choice. Hudl is strong where video is the core. Koach is made for the coach who wants numbers without a camera and without an analyst, and who also wants to run the rest of the team in one app.
What Koach does without a camera
In Koach you start the match with your lineup. When your team scores, Who scored the point? appears with the six players on court at that moment. Then, under How was the point scored?, you choose between Attack, Block, Serve / Ace and Opponent error. When the opponent scores, you note under What went wrong? which error your team made, or you tap Good ball by opponent. When the opponent serves, you can rate the reception from 0 to 3. How that works in practice is covered in tracking volleyball stats with an app.
The numbers already help you during the match. In a time-out you see the stats Since the previous time-out, including the Weakest rotation. With stats from video, you wait until the recording has been uploaded and processed; for Volleymetrics, Hudl promises the numbers within 12 hours.
After the last point, the match report is ready: Points per type, the Fault distribution, Player performance, the Serve runs with the longest runs of points on your own serve, Side-out per rotation and Momentum, the rally-by-rally flow of the match. How to read that line is explained in the momentum line. To share it, you turn the report into an image with Share match report, or under Share match pack you pick a card with the Result or the Star of the match for the team group chat or the club's page.
Coaching yourself and no time to tap during the rally? With Authorize a player to keep score, a team member with a linked account keeps the score and the stats on their own phone. If it did not happen during the match at all, you use Enter stats afterwards to fill in per player what happened, even days later.
Team management is in the same app
On Hudl's volleyball page, almost everything revolves around video and analysis. For the organization Hudl lists Messaging and Registration, but a team schedule with attendance or a practice planner is not among them (checked in October 2026). Yet that is where most of a coach's week goes: preparing practice, keeping track of who is coming and planning the matches. In Koach, that sits next to your match stats.
- Schedule. Practices, matches and other events live in one team schedule. With Sync calendar you subscribe your phone calendar to that schedule, and you share the link with your players and their parents.
- Attendance. Players sign themselves up or out, and parents do it for their child. At practice you tap Present, Late or Absent for each player, or All present in one go.
- Practices. You build a practice in blocks, with 200 animated drills to choose from, and afterwards you give each player stars for Technique, Game awareness, Coachability, Work ethic and Effort.
- Players and parents. They get their own free account. Players see their schedule, their own stats and their playing time; your notes stay hidden from them.
What Koach does not do
To avoid disappointment: Koach does not do video analysis. You cannot record, upload or rewatch footage in the app, and the app does not pull stats from video. A few things that analysis packages do have are missing too:
- stats per player for the opponent: the app only tracks your own players;
- heat maps and attack directions;
- a hitting percentage, because the app does not count attack attempts. It does track attack points, attack errors and side-out per rotation.
If you still want to film alongside the stats, a phone on a tripod is often enough; read first where to put the camera and how high. Whether software can already pull reliable stats from that kind of recording is covered in what automatic stats from video can do today.
How much does Hudl cost for volleyball, and what does Koach cost?
Hudl's volleyball page lists no prices, and neither do the product pages of Hudl Assist and Volleymetrics: for Assist you sign up through a form, for Volleymetrics you request a demo. For prices, Hudl points you to a pricing page where you first pick your type of organization and then your sport (checked in October 2026). The Hudl app itself is a free download, and the App Store lists in-app purchases with names such as Single Event Access and Multi-Event Access. Balltime does give an amount on its pricing page: $20 per month for the plan for one player. For a team, you contact them for a price.
You can try Koach free for 14 days, with no credit card and with every feature. After that you choose Coach for €2.99 per month (one team, two coaches) or Club for €9.99 per month (unlimited teams and coaches). With a yearly plan you pay €2.49 or €8.33 per month. Players and parents use the app for free. All prices are on the pricing page; in the App Store and on Google Play you pay the store price in your own currency.
When is Koach a good Hudl alternative, and when is it not?
Stay with Hudl, or choose it, if:
- you want to rewatch every rally and use clips in your film session;
- there is a fixed camera in your gym, or your club or school already films with Hudl;
- you play at college or pro level, which is what Volleymetrics is made for;
- you have an analyst or a dedicated statistician who does not also have to coach.
Choose Koach if:
- you coach a club or youth team without a camera and without an analyst;
- you want stats per player and per rotation that you, a substitute or a team member enter from the sideline;
- you want your schedule, attendance and practices in the same app as your matches;
- you want a price you can see up front, without a quote or a sales call.
If you want to look more widely, more apps are compared side by side in the comparison of volleyball apps, and what to look for in general is covered in the checklist for choosing a volleyball app.
The test question. Who watched the film of your last match, and what was done with it? If the honest answer is "nobody", you do not need a video subscription; you need numbers that are ready the moment the last point is played.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a free alternative to Hudl?
SoloStats 123 is free to use and built for volleyball: according to the App Store it is free for unlimited teams and matches, with paid subscriptions available in the app (checked in October 2026). It is a stats app, not a team app; how it compares with Koach is covered in the SoloStats alternative. You can try Koach free for 14 days with every feature and no credit card; after that Coach costs €2.99 per month. Players and parents use the app for free.
What is a good alternative to Hudl Assist?
Hudl Assist produces stats and reports from the video of your match, so you always need a recording for it (checked in October 2026). If your team does not film, the alternative is stats entered during the match. In Koach you tap who scored after every point and how, and when the match is over the points per player, side-out per rotation and momentum are ready. There is no footage attached to them.
Can Koach pull stats from game film?
No. Koach does not do video analysis: you do not record footage in the app and you do not upload any. The stats come from what you or an authorized team member tap during the match, or from what you fill in per player afterwards. If you want video and stats linked together, Hudl Assist and Balltime are built for that.
Who keeps the stats if I am coaching the match?
You can do it yourself, with a few taps per point, but you do not have to. With Authorize a player to keep score you hand scoring to a team member with a linked account, who keeps the score and the stats on their own phone. If it does not work out during the match at all, you use Enter stats afterwards to fill in per player what happened, even days later.
Can I use Hudl and Koach together?
Yes, they mostly do different things. You use Hudl for the recordings and what comes out of them, and Koach for live stats per player, the lineup, practices, attendance and the schedule. Keep in mind that you then pay for two services and that your numbers live in two apps. If your team does not film, Koach on its own is enough.
