Follow your set
The setter delivers a set from well off the net out to the pin, then chases his own ball to drop into coverage behind the hitter. Two things in one movement: a difficult set, and the habit of not standing around watching once you have set.
Phase 1 of 7The setter has the ball far from the net; the outside hitter is ready at the pin
This animation comes straight out of the Koach app. In the app you play it at your own pace and the positions carry your players' real names.

What you are training
Follow your set: set out-of-system to the pin and sprint straight into coverage under the hitter.
- Setting high and wide from a position well off the net.
- Moving into coverage the instant the set is gone instead of watching the ball.
- A low coverage posture just behind the hitter.
Coaching points
After you set you don't watch, you move.
Setters admire their own ball. In exactly those two beats, the block touch drops on the spot where they should have been standing.
Stand within two meters behind the hitter, not next to him.
A ball that hits the block almost always comes straight back down, just behind the hitter. Standing beside him gets you nothing.
Bend your knees with your hands low and open.
In coverage the ball comes fast and from above. Hands at hip height can still come up; hands above your head can no longer get down.
Set to the antenna, not toward the middle.
A set out of the back corner that drifts inside runs straight into the block. Setting wide gives the hitter room and makes your own coverage spot predictable.
Variations
- Easier
- The setter may catch the ball and throw it over; all the attention goes to the sprint into coverage.
- Harder
- Put up a block that deflects the ball back, so coverage actually gets a ball to handle.
- With six players
- Two hitters, two setters and two blockers; after every ball the setters switch sides.
- As a game
- A rally in which coverage digs the blocked ball back up is worth two points, a regular attack landing in the court one. First to ten.
