Run-throughs
The ball drops short and well in front of the player; the only way to get it is to sprint straight through it and play it on the move. Stopping to handle the ball neatly is the mistake here, not the solution.
Phase 1 of 5Coach with ball, two players in line, target at the net
This animation comes straight out of the Koach app. In the app you play it at your own pace and the positions carry your players' real names.

What you are training
Run-throughs: a short ball well in front of the player; sprint through it and pass on the move to the target.
- Reading a short ball the moment it leaves the coach's hand, not once it is already dropping.
- Passing while you are still moving, with a platform that only gives the ball height.
- Running through after the contact instead of braking, because braking costs you the ball.
Coaching points
First step explosive, last step long.
A long last step gets the body low without the trunk folding forward. Little choppy steps at the end always come up short.
Arms low from your very first step.
Run with your arms up and you still have to drop them at the last moment, and then you contact the ball with your hands instead of your forearms.
Give the ball height only, you already have the speed.
You are running forward and that momentum goes into the ball by itself. Add force on top of it and the ball flies meters past the target.
Do not slow down after the pass.
Running through and only then turning avoids the abrupt stop on one leg, which is the biggest injury risk in this drill.
Variations
- Easier
- Feed the ball less far forward and let it bounce once before it is played.
- Harder
- Feed short to the left and short to the right without warning, so the player also has to choose which way to sprint.
- With six players
- Two lines with two feeders and two targets, so two run-throughs are going at the same time.
- As a game
- Five balls per player. A ball the target can catch scores a point, a ball that hits the floor costs one. Highest score wins.
