Triangle pass and move
Two triangles of five: three play, two wait, and everybody moves on after every ball. With five players per triangle there is always somebody on the way to a corner that is still occupied, which is why this drill lives or dies on calling.
Phase 1 of 5Two triangles of five; the ball starts at the first corner
This animation comes straight out of the Koach app. In the app you play it at your own pace and the positions carry your players' real names.

What you are training
Passing drill: pass in a triangle and follow your ball to the next corner. Constant position changes and communication.
- Filling a spot the moment it comes free, without getting in the way of the player on the ball.
- Talking through the switch: who takes which corner.
- Keeping the ball going while players are moving around you.
Coaching points
Call "clear" as you leave your corner.
The player coming in has to know when the spot is free. Without a signal you get two players there, or none at all.
The players waiting stand behind the corner, not beside it.
Standing beside the corner means standing in the path of the ball, and then the drill gets played around you instead of through you.
Play higher than you would in a triangle of three.
With five players there is always somebody still on the way to a corner. The extra height buys the incoming player exactly the half second they need to get set.
Keep the triangle big enough that players have to move.
With corners four meters apart everybody reaches everything without moving, and then the drill only trains hands.
Variations
- Easier
- Passing only, no set or attack, and the waiting players only step in once the ball is dead.
- Harder
- Two balls per triangle, half a rotation apart.
- With six players
- Two triangles of three with no waiting line, or one triangle of six with two players per corner.
- As a game
- Which triangle completes the most rounds in three minutes, counted from the first pass until the ball is back at the starting corner?
