BAND vs TeamSnap: which app fits your volleyball team?
The short answer
BAND is a free, ad-supported group app for messages, photos and a shared calendar. TeamSnap is a team organizer: chat and scheduling are free, availability and stats come with a paid plan. Pick BAND to share, TeamSnap to plan. Neither mentions rotations or the libero; Koach does, but has no chat.
BAND vs TeamSnap: the question comes up the moment your volleyball team's group chat gets too busy. The two look alike, but they were built for different jobs. Here they are side by side, honestly, with TeamReach, sportsYou and Spond briefly alongside, plus when an app that actually knows volleyball is the better fit.
BAND vs TeamSnap: what's the difference?
We make Koach, an app for volleyball coaches, so read this as a comparison from someone with skin in the game. That is why every other app gets a link to its source, and why we also say where that app is stronger. Everything about BAND, TeamSnap and the other apps in this article was checked in October 2026 in the App Store and on Google Play.
BAND by NAVER is an app for any group: families, friends, schools and teams. New posts from your groups show up on the Home tab, and you get a push notification for each one. There is a shared group calendar with reminders, you keep photos and videos in albums, and you can run polls and to-do lists. According to the version history in the App Store, you can also add a sign-up sheet to an event, so you can see who is in. BAND works on your computer too. The app is free and, according to Google Play, contains ads.
TeamSnap is a team organizer for all kinds of sports, volleyball included. The App Store lists scheduling, availability, roster and chat as the core, plus building lineups and live game updates. Without paying, the same description says you get team chat and scheduling. Availability, player stats and shared media are listed under the paid Premium and Ultra plans, which you can try for free first. Unlimited access to drills and practice plans comes with the paid TeamSnap+.
In short: BAND organizes a group, TeamSnap organizes a team. In BAND the conversation is the center of everything; in TeamSnap it is the schedule and the question of who is showing up. Both are big: BAND sits at 50 million+ downloads on Google Play, TeamSnap at 5 million+.

Both apps work in English, so for most teams in the US or the UK language will not decide it. It does matter when your roster includes players or parents who would rather read another language: the App Store lists BAND in nine languages, including Spanish, Japanese and Korean, and TeamSnap in English, French and Spanish. If TeamSnap is the app you are thinking of leaving, our TeamSnap alternative for volleyball coaches walks through what changes for a volleyball team.
When to choose BAND, and when to choose TeamSnap
BAND is the better fit if you mainly want messages to land and stay put:
- your group is bigger than the team itself, for example players, parents and friends of the club;
- you want to keep the season's photos and videos and share them with each other;
- you want an app that costs nothing and where everyone can join the conversation;
- you are already on BAND with school, family or friends and want the team in the same app.
TeamSnap is the better fit if you want to run the team:
- you want to see who is coming to each practice and match; the App Store lists availability under Premium and Ultra;
- your family or club has teams in several sports, and you want one app for all of them;
- you want lineups and live game updates in the same app as your schedule.
What about TeamReach, sportsYou or Spond?
Three more names come up in the same searches. TeamReach sits between BAND and TeamSnap: besides group chats and direct messages, it has a schedule where people sign up for each event. Your group joins with a code, so nobody has to pass phone numbers around. It is free, with ads you can remove through an in-app purchase. sportsYou, according to the App Store, was built together with coaches and has a calendar, messaging, chat, files and a gallery for photos and videos; the paid sportsYou Pro adds things like scheduled messages and a more advanced calendar. Both are listed in the App Store in English only.
Spond is the third: a free team organizer for practices, matches and payments, available in 24 languages according to the App Store. Put it next to BAND and the split is clear: Spond revolves around the team's events, BAND around the group's messages and photos. Whether Spond suits a volleyball team is covered in our Spond alternative for volleyball. For a wider comparison of messaging apps, including GroupMe and Heja, see sports team communication apps compared.
Where BAND and TeamSnap stop: volleyball
For a volleyball coach, the real work starts where both apps leave off. Before a match you want to know who is coming, but after that you also need to know who stands where, who is serving, when the libero goes in and who scored the points. BAND is not built for that. TeamSnap does mention lineups and player stats, but nothing about rotations, a setter who rotates through, a libero or a 5-1. These are apps for any group, or any sport, at once, and in volleyball that shows quickly: your lineup changes every time you win back the serve. If you use BAND or TeamSnap, that part ends up on paper or in a second app.

Try Koach with your teamWhat Koach does: the admin and the match in one app
Koach is an app for volleyball coaches, not a group app for everyone. The part of BAND and TeamSnap that a coach actually needs is in there, done its own way:
- Sign-ups. For each practice and match, players choose I'm coming or Can't make it, and for a match also I'm coming to watch. With Sign up for all sessions they sign up for every practice in one tap. Parents do it for their child.
- Announcements instead of chat. Under Announcements you post, as the coach, an Announcement, a Poll or a Task; for a task, someone taps I’ll do it. How that works is explained in team communication with announcements, polls and tasks.
- Push notifications and your own calendar. In the iPhone and Android app, the team gets a notification for a new announcement and for any change to the schedule; the browser does not send push notifications. With Sync calendar your practices and matches also show up in your phone's calendar.
The difference is what happens next. Whoever signs up goes into your lineup. In the Lineup view you choose a 5-1, 4-2 or 6-2, assign your setter and libero, and with View all 6 rotations you see where everyone stands in every rotation. On match day you score live: for each point you pick who won it and how, the app keeps track of the Serve order and rotates the lineup with you. With Swap libero automatically the libero comes in for the middle blocker in the back row on their own. After the match, points and errors per player are ready, without retyping anything.
Who Koach is for, and when BAND or TeamSnap is still the better pick
Koach is a good fit if:
- you coach a volleyball team and want sign-ups, lineups, live scoring and practices in one app;
- you want to give your players and parents an app that costs them nothing;
- your team speaks English, Dutch, German, Spanish, Italian or Polish: everyone picks their own app language.
BAND or TeamSnap is still the better choice if:
- you mainly want a place to talk and share photos and videos: Koach has no chat, no direct messages and no photo album;
- you want one app for teams in several sports: Koach is for indoor volleyball only;
- you want an app that stays free for the coach: you try Koach free for 14 days, and after that you pay.
You also do not have to put everything in one app. If you keep BAND for photos and team banter, move sign-ups and match day to Koach, and agree which app counts when something changes. Still not sure which volleyball app suits you? Run through the checklist for choosing a volleyball app as a coach, or see the overview of sports team apps for volleyball.
What do BAND, TeamSnap and Koach cost?
BAND is free to download and, according to Google Play, contains ads. In the US App Store, BAND also lists in-app purchases such as sticker packs and 30 days without ads, each for $1.99, plus extra storage. TeamSnap is free to use for team chat and scheduling, with the paid Premium and Ultra plans on top. In the US App Store, in-app purchases in TeamSnap range from $1.99 (TeamSnap Plus) to $59.99 (TeamSnap+ Content & Ad-Free). According to Google Play, TeamSnap contains ads as well.
You can try Koach free for 14 days, with no credit card, with one team. After that you choose Coach for €2.99 per month (one team, two coaches) or Club for €9.99 per month (unlimited teams and coaches). On the website, a yearly plan brings that down to €2.49 or €8.33 per month. In the App Store and on Google Play you see the price in your own currency. Players and parents pay nothing. All prices are on the pricing page.
Choose on a busy week, not on a feature list. Put the week of an away game into the app you are considering: one practice, one match and one message about rides. If you are still texting around on Friday night to find out who is coming, it is not the right app for your team.

Frequently asked questions
Is BAND or TeamSnap free?
Both are free to download (checked in October 2026). According to Google Play, BAND contains ads, and in the app you can buy things like stickers or 30 days without ads. TeamSnap vs TeamReach: which is better?
It depends on what you are after. TeamReach is built around messaging: group chats and direct messages, with a schedule and sign-ups for each event, free with ads you can remove in the app. TeamSnap does more, with the roster, lineups and live game updates, but according to the App Store availability sits in the paid plans and drills in the paid TeamSnap+. TeamReach is listed in the App Store in English only, TeamSnap in English, French and Spanish (checked in October 2026).
sportsYou vs TeamSnap: what is the difference?
sportsYou leans toward communication: according to the App Store it was built together with coaches and has a calendar, messaging, chat, files and a photo and video gallery, with scheduled messages and a more advanced calendar in the paid sportsYou Pro. TeamSnap leans toward organizing: scheduling, availability, roster and chat, with availability, player stats and shared media in the paid Premium and Ultra plans (checked in October 2026). sportsYou is listed in the App Store in English only, TeamSnap in English, French and Spanish.
Can TeamSnap do volleyball rotations?
In the App Store, TeamSnap mentions building lineups, but nothing about rotations, a setter, a libero or systems like the 5-1 (checked in October 2026). In Koach you choose a 5-1, 4-2 or 6-2, assign your setter and libero, and see all six rotations. On match day that lineup rotates with you while you score live, and the libero can swap in automatically.
Can I use BAND and Koach together?
Yes. A group app for the social side and an app for the admin work fit together fine, and with messages, photos and videos BAND is strong at the first. Koach has no chat; that is where you handle sign-ups for each practice and match, announcements, the lineup and live scoring. Do agree which app counts when something changes, for example: a rescheduled practice only goes in Koach. That way everyone knows where to look.
