Building your roster: how many players do you need per position?
You need six players to start, but with six players you will not make it to December. A good roster is big enough to absorb injuries and holidays, and small enough to give everyone playing time.
The ideal size: 10 to 12
For a competitive team, 10–12 players is the sweet spot. Fewer than 10 and one wave of flu puts you in the gym with five; more than 12 and playing time can no longer be shared fairly — with grumbling on the bench as a result. Practice-only members who do not play matches are counted separately.
The distribution per position
- 2 setters — lose one player on this position without a backup and your season tips over. See the setter's role.
- 4 outside hitters — the position with the heaviest workload (serve receive and attack), so the most rotation.
- 2 to 3 middle blockers — with the libero taking over in the back row, two middles get you far; three is comfort.
- 1 to 2 opposites — with just one opposite, you want an outside hitter with opposite as their second position.
- 1 libero — plus an agreement on who takes over the shirt when they are away.
How to spot the gaps before the season
Put your whole roster with positions into the app and review the overview critically: which position has only one name? That is your risk. Solve it with a targeted addition, a retraining project (that tall outside hitter can certainly learn to play middle) or an agreement with the team above or below you about guest players.
Think in matches, not names: the question is not 'do I have 12 players' but 'can I put six players in a sensible lineup every Saturday, plus substitutes'. Count on 80% availability and you are counting realistically.
Frequently asked questions
How many players can I put on the match form?
In most national competitions, a team can typically register 12 players per match (plus libero arrangements depending on the division). Check the rules for your division — and above all make sure your admin matches the player cards.
What do I do with a group that is too big?
Split it into a match roster and practice members, with clear criteria and a route between the two. Uncertainty about who 'belongs' costs more team spirit than an honest separation.
When should my roster be finalised?
Ideally four weeks before the first league match: that leaves time to drill lineups and close gaps. Inviting players and filling profiles happens in that same window.
