Hudl vs GameChanger for volleyball: video or free scoring?

The short answer

Pick Hudl if you film your matches and want stats pulled from the footage. Pick GameChanger if you coach in the US and want free scoring, streaming and team messaging. If you want stats per player and per rotation without a camera, plus practices and attendance, a volleyball app like Koach is the third way.

Hudl vs GameChanger for your volleyball team? Both are big American sports apps, but they solve different problems: Hudl is built around video and analysis, GameChanger around free scoring and streaming. Below they go side by side, honestly and with sources, and you'll see when a volleyball app without a camera is the better fit.

Full disclosure: we make Koach, the third app in this story. So read this as a comparison by a maker with skin in the game. That is exactly why you'll also find below what Hudl and GameChanger do better, and who should pick them.

Hudl vs GameChanger: what's the difference?

Both are American sports apps that cover volleyball, but they start in a different place.

So the real question is: do you want to analyze footage, or score and broadcast for free? Many club and youth coaches have a third question: how do I get stats per player and per rotation, without a camera and without an analyst? What to weigh up:

What Hudl does for volleyball

Hudl's volleyball page lists a whole range of products for clubs, high schools, colleges and pro teams (checked in October 2026). For a coach, these are the main ones:

According to the App Store, coaches use the app to review games, practices and opponents, with data and notes on every clip; parents and fans watch livestreams and highlights in it.

Where Hudl shines: video and stats belong together, including for scouting an opponent. If you want to rewatch every rally, Hudl is a mature package. The app has been in the App Store since 2011, has more than a million downloads on Google Play and is available in English, French, Japanese and Portuguese. You'll also find it in App Stores outside the United States, including the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Italy and Poland. What you can do without a camera is covered in our Hudl alternative for volleyball without a camera.

What GameChanger does for volleyball

On its volleyball page, GameChanger calls itself the app for volleyball streaming, scoring and team communication, and adds that it is completely free for coaches (checked in October 2026).

Where GameChanger shines: it costs the coach nothing, and family who can't make it watches live. The app has more than five million downloads on Google Play. However, the App Store lists coaching insights and game recaps only for baseball, softball and basketball, not for volleyball. And outside the United States it gets tricky: the listing names English only, and when we checked in October 2026 we found GameChanger in the US App Store, but not in the Dutch, British, German, Spanish, Italian or Polish one. What a volleyball coach misses in it is covered in GameChanger for volleyball.

Hudl gets the match out of the footage, GameChanger broadcasts it and keeps the score. What you won't find in those sources: stats per rotation that you enter yourself from the sideline, without a camera. That's where the third way comes in.

The third way: stats without a camera

Without a camera, a video package is out, and serving stats still don't tell you which rotation your team gets stuck in. That's what Koach is built for: an app made only for volleyball, where you or someone on the bench taps in what happened on every point.

You start the match with your lineup. After every point you win, the app asks Who scored the point?, showing the six players on court at that moment. Then, under How was the point scored?, you choose Attack, Block, Serve / Ace or Opponent error. If the opponent scores, you pick the cause under What went wrong?, or tap Good ball by opponent. When the opponent serves, you rate the serve receive from 0 to 3.

No camera needed: after every point you tap the player, then choose how the point was won.

Try stats without a camera

Know what's going wrong by the time-out

The biggest difference from stats pulled from footage is timing. Volleymetrics delivers within twelve hours, and that is fast for an analysis of every touch. But it does nothing for you in the second set. In Koach you tap Time-out and immediately see the points won and lost since the start of the set or since the last time-out, Most faults and Weakest rotation. Below that you'll find this set's points per type and the fault distribution.

During the time-out: what happened since the start of the set, with the weakest rotation alongside.

After the last point: per player and per rotation

After the match the numbers are ready: Points per type, the Fault distribution, Player performance with each player's points from attack, block and serve, serve receive per player, Side-out per rotation and Momentum, the flow of the match rally by rally. Side-out per rotation shows which rotation your team gets stuck in on the opponent's serve. How to track that and read it back is explained in tracking volleyball stats with an app.

After the match: rallies won on the opponent's serve per rotation, and the flow of every set.

If you're coaching, you don't have to tap as well: with Authorize a player to keep score, a team member with a linked account keeps the score and the stats on their own phone. If that didn't work out, Enter stats afterwards lets you fill in what each player did, even days later. Your schedule, attendance, practices and 200 animated drills live in the same app, on iPhone, iPad, Android and in the browser. Players and parents get their own free account.

What Koach doesn't do

To save you a disappointment, here it is straight:

How much do Hudl, GameChanger and Koach cost?

Hudl. The volleyball page lists no prices. For Hudl Assist you sign up through a form and for Volleymetrics you request a demo; you hear the price after that. The app is free to download; parents and fans buy access to events in it, from $7.19 to $21.49 in the App Store (checked in October 2026).

GameChanger. According to the help article on subscriptions and the App Store listing, all features, including the paid ones, are free for coaches and staff of the team they manage. The people who do pay are parents and fans: Plus costs $9.99 per month or $39.99 per year, Premium $99.99 per year; in the App Store, Premium costs $14.99 per month. The same help article also mentions a Team Pass for a team's parents and fans: $239 (Plus) or $449 (Premium) per season.

Koach. You can try Koach free for 14 days, with no credit card and every feature. After that you choose Coach for €2.99 per month (one team, two coaches) or Club for €9.99 per month (unlimited teams and coaches). With a yearly plan you pay €2.49 or €8.33 per month. If you buy through the App Store or Google Play, you see the price in your own currency. All prices are on the pricing page.

So the business model differs: with Hudl you get the price after a request, with GameChanger parents and fans pay, through their own subscription or a Team Pass, and with Koach the coach pays while players and parents join for free.

After your next match, count two things. How many minutes of footage did anyone actually rewatch? And do you know in which rotation you lost the most rallies on the opponent's serve? If the first is zero and the second is a guess, you need stats from the sideline, not a camera.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hudl or GameChanger better for volleyball?

It depends on what you need. Hudl is the better pick if you film matches and want stats and clips from the footage, including for scouting. GameChanger is the better pick if you coach in the US and want free scoring, serving stats and a livestream for family. If you want stats per rotation entered from the sideline without a camera, look at a volleyball app like Koach.

Is GameChanger free for volleyball?

For the coach, yes. According to GameChanger's help center, all features, including the paid ones, are free for coaches and staff of the team they manage. Parents and fans pay for extras: Plus costs $9.99 per month or $39.99 per year, Premium $99.99 per year. Checked in October 2026; prices may change.

How much does Hudl cost for a volleyball team?

It isn't on the website. Hudl's volleyball page lists no prices; for Hudl Assist you sign up through a form and for Volleymetrics you request a demo (checked in October 2026). The app itself is free to download, and parents and fans buy access to events or a season pass in it. What your team pays, you only hear after your request.

Can you use GameChanger outside the US?

Not easily through the App Store. When we checked in October 2026 we found GameChanger in the US App Store, but not in the Dutch, British, German, Spanish, Italian or Polish one. We did not check Google Play country by country. The App Store listing also names English as its only language. Hudl is in those stores, in English, French, Japanese and Portuguese. So is Koach, which works in six languages.

Can Koach film or livestream a volleyball match?

No. Koach does not do video: you don't record or upload footage, and you don't stream. Parents don't follow the score live on their own phone either. After the match you can share the match report as an image or copy the match summary for your team group chat. If you want footage, Hudl is built for that; if you want a free stream, GameChanger.

How much does Koach cost after the free trial?

You can try Koach free for 14 days, with no credit card and every feature. After that, Coach costs €2.99 per month for one team with two coaches, and Club €9.99 per month for unlimited teams and coaches. With a yearly plan you pay €2.49 or €8.33 per month.
