Spond vs TeamSnap: which is better for a volleyball team?
The short answer
Spond is free to download, comes in 24 languages and lets you collect fees and payments; TeamSnap starts at $0, comes in English, French and Spanish and puts availability tracking behind an upgrade. Neither mentions rotations or a libero. For that, use Koach alongside or instead of either app.
Spond vs TeamSnap: two well-known team apps that both handle your schedule, attendance and team messages. Full disclosure: we make Koach, an app for volleyball coaches, so read this as a comparison by an interested party. We stick to what both apps say about themselves in the app stores, and for TeamSnap also on its own pricing page.
Spond vs TeamSnap: what should a volleyball coach look for?
Spond and TeamSnap are both built for every sport. They handle the organising around your team, and they differ on a few points that really matter for a volleyball team. Put them side by side on these seven questions:
- Messaging. Can everyone talk to each other in the app, or does only the coach send announcements?
- Who's coming. Can you see who is coming to each practice and match, and do you have to pay extra for that?
- Payments. Does the app collect membership fees or tournament money, or do you sort that out somewhere else?
- Cost and ads. What does it cost to start, what does an upgrade cost, and will your players see ads?
- Language. Does the app speak the language of your players and their parents?
- Sport. Is the app made for every sport, or does it know how volleyball works?
- Match day. Does the app know who is in the front row, where the libero comes in and who won the point?

Where Spond is stronger
Spond comes from the Norwegian company Spond AS and describes itself on the App Store as the free app for coaches, club admins, parents and players. Its strengths, according to that same listing: group chats, posts and polls; automatic RSVP tracking, so you see who is coming; collecting membership fees and event payments, with reminders and a record of who has paid; importing members from Excel and exporting attendance lists to Excel. Collecting money sits in the same feature list as scheduling and chat. TeamSnap mentions payments mainly among its features for clubs and leagues, and on its pricing page not for single teams.
On top of that, Spond is available in 24 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Polish. That helps on a team where not everyone speaks the same language at home, and with parents who would rather read in their own language. If you want to know what is and is not free in Spond and other team apps, read our team app cost comparison.
Where TeamSnap is stronger
TeamSnap is the older of the two: its first version appeared on the App Store in 2010, and its listing there speaks of more than 25 million users in 196 countries. The app is aimed mainly at youth sports. TeamSnap also has scheduling and messaging with the whole team or selected people; tracking availability comes with a paid upgrade. What Spond does not mention in its store listing: real-time game updates for teammates, families and fans, with a report after the game. The paid TeamSnap+ also gives you unlimited access to drills, practice plans and 1:1 training, built with partners such as FC Barcelona, Major League Baseball and the Jr. NBA. The partners TeamSnap names come from soccer, baseball, basketball and lacrosse, not from volleyball. If your club runs several sports, that content can still be useful.
For clubs and leagues, TeamSnap's pricing page lists registrations and payments, organisation-wide communications and built-in live streaming, with customised pricing. Its Google Play listing adds that the club can see who has paid and who has an outstanding balance. If your club already runs on TeamSnap, or your families want the app in English, French or Spanish, it is an established choice that you do not need to replace.
What about a volleyball team?
Here the two look more like each other than like a volleyball app. Spond lets you set up a starting line-up for a match, keep track of goals and vote for player of the match; TeamSnap lets you create lineups and lists player stats in its paid plans. Those are features for every sport. Neither store listing mentions rotations or a libero. For organising your team, that makes no difference. In the third set of a close match it does: then you want to know who is in the front row when your setter rotates to the back, and who is scoring the points in this set.
That is what Koach is built for. On the Team tab you open Lineup view, choose 5-1, 4-2 or 6-2, put your six players in their spots and assign your setter and libero. With View all 6 rotations you see who stands where in every rotation, before your team even steps on court. More on how that works in our guide to the volleyball lineup app.
14 days free, no credit card. Set up your lineup, score your next match live and see what your team app has not been showing you.
Try Koach with your volleyball teamOn match day you score live. When your team wins a point, you pick the player under Who scored the point? and then how the point was won. The serve order sits at the top, and your current lineup rotates along when your team wins back the serve. With Swap libero automatically your libero comes in for the middle blocker in the back row and goes out as soon as that player is due in the front row or to serve. After the match, points and errors per player are ready, without anyone retyping a stat sheet.
Attendance and team messages in Koach
Koach covers the organising too, although deliberately less of it than Spond or TeamSnap. Players and parents get a free account and reply to each practice and match with I'm coming or Can't make it, optionally with a reason; for a match there is also I'm coming to watch. For a match, Sign-ups shows who is coming and who has not replied yet, and All present marks everyone who has not replied as present in one tap. Messages to the team go through Announcements: a regular announcement, a poll or a task that someone takes on by tapping I’ll do it. In the iPhone and Android app these arrive as push notifications.
What Koach does not do
- No chat. There are no group conversations and no private messages; there are announcements, polls, tasks and push notifications.
- No payments. Koach does not collect membership fees and does not send or receive money. With the Club plan you can keep track of who owes what, using your own club's payment link.
- No other sports. Everything assumes indoor volleyball, six against six. Beach volleyball is not included.
- No importing a member list. Players join through their own invite link, or you type in the names yourself.
- Six languages. English, Dutch, German, Spanish, Italian and Polish: fewer than Spond and more than TeamSnap, but no French.
Which app is right for your team?
- Spond if you mainly want to organise, collect money through the app and need an app in many languages.
- TeamSnap if your club already uses it, your families want English, French or Spanish, or you want the live updates for parents and the training content from other sports.
- Koach if you coach a volleyball team and want lineup, rotations, live scoring and player development in one app, with attendance and announcements included.
You do not have to choose between organising and coaching. If your club already handles fees and club messages in Spond or TeamSnap, leave that as it is and use Koach for what happens on court. If you would rather have fewer apps, pick the one that covers most of your week. What a switch involves is covered in the Spond alternative for volleyball and the TeamSnap alternative for volleyball coaches. Every kind of team app is in the overview of sports team apps for volleyball, and what a good coaching app needs is in the checklist for choosing a volleyball app for coaches.
How much do Spond, TeamSnap and Koach cost?
Spond is listed as a free app on the App Store, with no in-app purchases in the listing. TeamSnap starts at $0 for a single team, according to its own pricing page; an upgrade unlocks availability tracking, larger rosters and drills, among other things, and on the App Store you can buy ad-free use separately.
You can try Koach free for 14 days, with no credit card and every feature. After that you choose Coach for €2.99 per month (one team, two coaches) or Club for €9.99 per month (unlimited teams and coaches). With a yearly plan that is €2.49 or €8.33 per month. Players and parents pay nothing. In the App Store and on Google Play you see the price in your own currency; the amounts are on the pricing page.
Agree on one app for sign-ups. If you use Koach alongside Spond or TeamSnap, have players sign up and drop out in one app only. Otherwise you end up keeping two lists that never quite match.
