Relative age effect: the youngest player in your youth team
Two children in the same team, eleven months apart. One jumps higher, stands stronger and gets the ball above the tape; the other comes up just underneath. It is easy to record that as a difference in talent, when it is mostly a difference in age. And for years it decides who gets trained, selected and noticed.
The cut-off date is a choice, not a law of nature
Youth teams are grouped by year of birth, and the line between two age groups is called the cut-off date. That date looks like a given, but federations choose it themselves: some count from 1 January, others from the start of the sporting year in the summer or the autumn. Which date applies to your teams is in the competition regulations of your own federation — look it up, because it differs by country and sometimes by age category.
Why that is more than an administrative detail: who is the youngest changes with the cut-off date. A child born in November is nearly the youngest in the group when the cut-off is 1 January. With a cut-off of 1 October, that same child, in exactly the same body, is nearly the oldest. Nothing changes about the player; something changes about the yardstick.
It gets sharper at the boundary. Two children born a week apart can end up in two different age groups. One is then the very youngest of the older intake, the other the oldest of the younger one. Seven days' difference becomes almost a full year's difference in relative position. Once you know that, you stop saying a player is "just young for the year" as if it were a property of the child. It is a property of the calendar.
What eleven months is worth on a volleyball court
Within a single age group there is a maximum of eleven months and thirty days' difference. For an eleven-year-old that is almost a tenth of their entire life. Convert it into centimetres and it becomes more concrete:
- Height. In the years before the growth spurt, children grow an average of five to six centimetres a year. In the fastest growth year itself that rises to eight to ten. A year's difference in age is therefore, depending on the phase, five to ten centimetres.
- Reach. Arms grow along with the trunk. A player who is six centimetres taller also reaches roughly six centimetres higher at the net with an extended arm.
- Jumping power. On top of that come muscle mass and strength development, which lag behind height but move in the same direction.
- Coordination and attention span. Eleven months of extra practice at moving, and eleven months of extra maturation of the nervous system that controls those movements.
Add the first three together and you easily reach ten centimetres of difference in attacking reach between the oldest and the youngest of the same age group. At a youth net of around 2.10 metres — the exact height per category differs by federation — that is the difference between getting the ball above the tape and hitting into it. In practice you see one child attacking and the other tipping, and everyone sees it, parents on the sideline included.
That this is not an impression is well documented. Barnsley, Thompson and Barnsley (1985) were the first to demonstrate the skewed birth-month distribution systematically, in Canadian ice hockey: from the junior leagues up to the NHL there were far more players born early in the year. The meta-analysis by Cobley and colleagues (2009) in Sports Medicine brought together thirty-eight studies with more than two hundred and fifty samples and found the effect across virtually all the sports examined, strongest in boys between roughly fifteen and eighteen and at the highest levels. Musch and Grondin (2001) showed what amplifies it: the bigger the pool and the stricter the selection, the more skewed the birth months become.
Why volleyball is more sensitive to it than most sports
In every sport it helps to be bigger and stronger, but volleyball has two features that magnify the effect.
The net makes height binary. In many sports being bigger is a gradual advantage. In volleyball there is a hard threshold at a fixed height: you get above it or you don't. A player five centimetres below it cannot attack five per cent less well — they cannot attack at all. That makes the gap between the oldest and the youngest of an intake extremely visible on the training floor.
Technique only shows up much later. The skills a younger child can excel in — a stable passing platform, reading where the ball is going, positioning in defence, timing a block — become visible over months, not over one tryout evening. Every short assessment situation therefore weighs systematically in favour of the oldest children.
And as soon as the choice has been made, it reinforces itself: the selected child gets better coaches, more match minutes and stronger opposition, and genuinely improves because of it. After two seasons the gap really is there — just not for the reason you wrote down at the time. Which is exactly why it is risky to lock a player into a fixed position at a young age.
Count your own intake: the quarter check
You don't have to take it on faith that this affects you. You can count it, and it takes ten minutes.
- Take your federation's cut-off date. Call the first three months after that date quarter 1, the next three quarter 2, and so on. Quarter 4 therefore holds the youngest children in the group.
- Put every player in your squad into the right quarter. The date of birth is in the player profile, so you don't have to ask anyone anything.
- Compare with what you would expect by chance: four times twenty-five per cent. Births are not spread exactly evenly across the year, but that deviation is a few per cent — not tens.
With twelve players you expect three per quarter. If you see 5-4-2-1, that can still be chance; twelve is too small to conclude anything from. So keep counting: your club's whole intake, or three year groups together. Only from around sixty to eighty players onwards does the distribution start to mean anything: if the first quarter is then well over twice the size of the fourth, that is a signal to take seriously. At that point you are not looking at a curiosity but at your own selection policy.
Then do the same count for the players you cut or who moved to a lower team. If your squad skews towards quarter 1 and your cut list skews towards quarter 4, you have your answer. You did not select on talent but on date of birth, however careful the process felt.
The second signal: birth month next to playing time
Team selection is only half the story: inside a neatly mixed team the effect can carry on in who actually plays. Count per player the number of sets played over the last ten matches and set that against their quarter. If the children from quarter 4 structurally play fewer sets than the rest — not in one match, but match after match — then the gap you saw at the start of the season is now a gap you are maintaining yourself. There is a third place where the effect quietly carries on: the promotion recommendation in the spring. A player who is the youngest of the intake and also still before their growth spurt is being assessed at precisely the wrong moment. In that meeting, put the birth month next to every recommendation, out loud. One sentence is enough: "this one is a November birthday, and that counts."
Tryout day: score blind, and add the date afterwards
The biggest gain is not in a complicated correction model but in the order of looking and knowing. On a tryout day this works:
- While watching: no dates of birth. Assessors score on bib number. Anyone who knows number 7 was born in October will unconsciously compensate or confirm. Keep the scoring clean.
- At the final weighing-up: birth month alongside. Put the quarter next to each score. Now it is not bias any more but information.
- One agreed decision rule. Agree in advance, and write it down: where scores are less than half a point apart on a five-point scale, the place goes to the younger player. That is not charity — it is the recognition that two equal scores at unequal ages are not an equal performance.
- A rough age correction where you need it. If you want to go further, add a quarter of a point on the visibly physical criteria — attacking height, blocking height, power on the serve — for every six months a player is younger than the oldest in the group. That is deliberately crude, and you may say so out loud. It is a counterweight, not a science. Never correct on criteria that have nothing to do with maturation, such as game reading or coachability.
- Look at the shape of the list, not just the names. If six children are cut and five of them come from quarter 4, put the list on the table one more time before you send it.
And the simplest measure of all: invite borderline cases to two ordinary practices. One evening measures who is already far along; two sessions measure how quickly someone picks something up — and that is the only thing that still says anything four years from now.
Key point: once a year, count the birth months of your squad and of the players you cut, split into four quarters from your federation's cut-off date. If the squad skews to the first quarter and the cut list to the fourth, you are not selecting on talent but on date of birth — and that is the one part of this story you control yourself.
Train on maturation instead of on year of birth
The content-based solution is called bio-banding: forming groups on maturation rather than on chronological age. Cumming and colleagues (2017) described that approach for youth sport, grouping players by the percentage of their predicted adult height they have already reached. Two thirteen-year-olds who are both at eighty-five per cent then train together — even if they are ten months and twelve centimetres apart. For an average club that is too heavy to do in full. What is feasible:
- Twenty minutes per session in skill groups. One block where you split by skill level, with the rest of the session mixed. That way the team stays one team.
- Regroup every four to six weeks. Short enough to stop labels forming and long enough to actually learn something. More on splitting up without dividing your group is in training with mixed ability levels.
- Two net heights in the gym. If you have two courts, don't hang them the same. A lower net gives a smaller child access to the same attacking drill instead of to an adapted version of it.
- Measure something to do with maturation. Record standing reach twice a season. A player who gains six centimetres in eight months is in all likelihood in their growth spurt and should not be judged on their current execution.
Team selection itself is the same trade-off on a larger scale: do you split by year of birth or by level, and where do you draw the line. That choice and its consequences are worked out in team selection in youth volleyball.
The flip side: what the youngest eventually gains from it
There is a side to this story coaches rarely tell. A child who plays for years against older, bigger opponents and still holds their own develops exactly the things that matter later: playing smarter, reading faster, working technically cleaner, dealing with setbacks. In professional ice hockey that reversal effect was described by Gibbs, Jarvis and Dufur (2012): players who were relatively young in their age group and still made it to the NHL had longer careers on average and were over-represented at the very top.
What that means for you: the autumn-born children still in your squad after two seasons have shown more than their place in the pecking order suggests. Treat them that way — don't give them the supporting role, give them the difficult job.
What you say to parents and players
This subject explains itself nicely, because it blames nobody. Three situations, with sentences you can use word for word.
To the parent of an autumn child who is behind: "Sanne was born in November and is playing with children up to eleven months older. At this age that is five to six centimetres and almost a year of coordination. Most children grow out of that gap on their own, somewhere around sixteen. What doesn't disappear on its own is how many balls she has touched in the meantime — and that is what I'm watching. I'm not going to spare her, I'm going to give her the difficult balls."
To the parent of a January child who is ahead: "Tim is one of the biggest right now and that helps him enormously. In three years that advantage is gone, and then he'll have to rely on his technique. That is why I have him passing and defending too, even where he isn't the best at it." That is the same message as in a broad youth development programme, just with a reason attached that parents understand immediately.
To the child themselves: short and factual, with no comforting undertone. "You're the youngest in this team, by almost a year. You notice it at the net. In a few years you won't notice it at all, and by then you'll have learned more than they have — because you've had to do it against bigger players the whole time." An explanation that is true usually lands better with children than a compliment that isn't.
Finally, put the club-wide quarter count on your technical committee's agenda once a year. That is often already enough to stop five coaches independently making the same unconscious choice.
