Scoring in volleyball: the rally point system explained
If you grew up with 'you only score on your own serve', it takes a moment to adjust: under the rally point system, every rally is worth a point. Here is how the count works — including the edge cases gyms still argue about.
The rally point system in three rules
- Every rally scores a point: whoever wins the rally gets the point — whether you were serving or not. If the receiving team wins, it also takes over the serve and rotates one position.
- Sets to 25, win by two: at 24-24 play continues until one team leads by two — 26-24, 27-25, in principle without end.
- Best of five: the first team to win three sets wins the match. A possible fifth set goes to 15 — also win by two. See the deciding set.
Why the system changed
Until 1999 only the serving team could score ('side-out scoring'); matches ran unpredictably long. Rally point scoring made volleyball tighter and more exciting: every ball counts, every service error is an instant point for the other side. For coaches it mainly means this: there are no 'free' sloppy rallies anymore — the points scored in the chaos count in full too.
Keeping score without counting errors
Manual counting breaks down at the usual moments: after a time-out, during a long scoring run, in the noise of 23-23. 25 is not a wall. The set only ends with a two-point lead — even above 25. The most stubborn misconception in recreational gyms is 'sudden death at 25': it does not exist.

Do you get a point when the opponent misses their serve?
Yes — every opponent error is a point for you, including service errors. Under the rally point system there is no such thing as a rally without a point.
How many sets does a volleyball match have?
A maximum of five: whoever wins three wins the match. At 3-0 or 3-1 the fifth set never happens; only at 2-2 does the short deciding set to 15 follow.
