Live scoring at 2-2 in sets: the deciding set
Two sets apiece, and suddenly different rules apply: to 15, switching at 8, and every tracking mistake feels like sacrilege. The fifth set is the toughest one for your admin too — unless it takes care of itself.
The special rules of set five
- To 15 points instead of 25 — with the familiar two-point lead required, so 14-14 means play on.
- Court switch at 8 points: as soon as one team reaches 8, both teams change ends — unique to the deciding set.
- New toss: before set five there is a fresh toss for serve and side.
- Everything else applies as usual: rotation, six substitutions, libero traffic.
Why tracking matters most right now
In a short set everything counts double: one counting error on the way to 15 weighs twice as heavily, percentage-wise, as on the way to 25. At the same time, this is the set where you as a coach want your attention on the court — not on your admin. In Koach set 5 goes to 15 points by default. Coaching the big points
Tactically, set five is a sprint: no time to recover from a bad start. The data from sets one to four is your preparation — who actually scored today (check the in-match player picture), whose serve was rolling? Put your points on the players who are switched on today, not on reputations. And save at least one time-out for after the court switch: statistically, the set turns most often between 8 and 11.
Keep tracking until the last ball. The temptation at 13-13 is to just watch. But these are exactly the points you want to look back on: who dared, who scored, who hid — that is gold for the debrief and for the next five-setter.

Why does the fifth set only go to 15 points?
To keep total match length manageable: after four full sets, a shortened decider is fairer for players and gym scheduling alike. The tension only grows because of it.
What exactly happens at the court switch at 8 points?
Both teams change ends immediately, keeping their rotation, the score and the serving turn. Play resumes exactly where it was — only the half of the court is different.
Do the statistics from set five simply count?
