Two setters in volleyball: setting up a 4-2 or 6-2 in the app
The short answer
With two setters in volleyball, the setter in the front row sets in a 4-2 and the one in the back row in a 6-2. In Koach you choose the 4-2 or 6-2 formation under Team > Lineups and assign the Setter and the Second setter; per match and per set you adjust that under Roles.
Two setters in volleyball means the setter role switches depending on the rotation. On paper that's an arrow in your diagram; an app has to know who is setting at any given moment. Here's how to set it up in Koach, and what the app does with it.
Who sets in which rotation?
In a 4-2 and a 6-2, the two setters stand opposite each other on the court. So there is always one in the front row and one in the back row. The difference is who sets:
- 4-2: the setter in the front row sets. That gives you two attackers at the net. More in the 4-2 system.
- 6-2: the setter in the back row comes forward to set, and the setter in the front row attacks. That way you have three attackers at the net in every rotation. See the 6-2 system.
Which system suits your team is covered in those articles. What else a setter does and how to choose one is in the setter role. This article is about the app.
How to set up two setters
- Choose the formation. Go to the Team tab and open Lineups. Under Formation, pick 4-2 or 6-2.
- Place your six. Tap a position and then a player from the bench, or tap two positions to swap them. Put the two setters opposite each other, for example in positions 1 and 4.
- Assign the roles. Under Roles you choose the Setter and the Second setter, and the libero if needed. The Second setter row only appears with 4-2 and 6-2.
- Check the rotations. All 6 rotations shows six small courts. In each one, the setter who sets in that rotation is highlighted, so you can see whether the two are correctly opposite each other.
This is your team's default: a new match starts with this lineup and these roles. How to build the lineup further is in creating a volleyball lineup.
A different setter for one match or one set
If your second setter can't make it for once, or you want a youth player to set, you change that at the match itself. Your players' profiles and the default in Team stay as they were:
- Per match. In Plan lineup and on the Prepare match start screen there is a Roles section with Setter, Middle blockers, Libero and Captain. Tap Setter. In the Roles in this match sheet, with a 4-2 or 6-2, tick two players under Setters, marked 1 and 2. You choose from the players on court.
- Per set. In the set break there is also a Roles section, below the lineup for the next set. There, in the Roles in set 2 sheet (or 3, 4, 5), you pick different setters, middles or liberos.
Two limits. You don't choose the formation per match; that comes from Team. And you don't change the roles while a set is in progress: that's only possible in the set break.

Try Koach with your teamWhat does the app do with two setters?
- The right name per rotation. In Team > Lineups the word Setter appears under the setter of that rotation, and on a planned match the S label, also for your players if you share the lineup with them. The app works out per rotation who that is.
- The libero goes in for the middles. The automatic libero swap looks at the middles you assign under Roles, not at your setters. If you also work with two liberos, read scoring with two liberos.
- Assists for whoever sets. When you record an attack point for another player, the setter of that rotation gets an assist. Each setter has their own Setting distribution block under Stats in their profile, with their assists and the attackers they set most often. The app assumes that the setter of that rotation gave the set, even if someone else played the second ball.
- Expert preselects the right setter. At the Set step, the setter of that rotation is already selected.
- Fixed rotation numbers. The rotations R1 to R6 in your stats are tied to the first setter. That way they don't shift when the other one takes over, and you compare rotation 3 in set 1 with rotation 3 in set 4.
This already worked before Koach 3.0; in 3.0 the roles got their own row on the start screen and a section in the set break. It's included in both plans; what they cost after the 14 free days is on the pricing page.
Store your 4-2 and a 5-1 as saved lineups. Under Saved lineups in Team > Lineups, Save current stores the court, the formation and both setters. If your second setter is absent, one tap brings back the 5-1.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a 4-2 and a 6-2?
In both systems two setters stand opposite each other. In a 4-2 the setter in the front row sets, so you have two attackers at the net. In a 6-2 the setter in the back row sets and the other one attacks, so you have three attackers at the net in every rotation. A 6-2 therefore needs setters who can also attack.
Can I choose between a 5-1 and a 4-2 per match?
In Koach the formation lives under Team > Lineups, not at the match. If you want to play a match with a 5-1 while your team normally plays a 4-2, switch the formation before that match. With a saved lineup that takes one tap, because it stores the formation and both setters. Per match and per set you do choose who the setters are.
Does Koach count assists for both setters?
Yes. On every attack point by another player, the setter of that rotation gets an assist: in a 4-2 the one in the front row, in a 6-2 the one in the back row. Both setters have their own Setting distribution block under Stats in their profile, with their assists and the attackers they set most often.
What does Koach cost for a team with two setters?
Two setters cost nothing extra: it's part of the lineup. You can try Koach free for 14 days, with no credit card and every feature. After that, choose Coach for €2.99 per month (one team, two coaches) or Club for €9.99 per month. The prices are on the pricing page.
