Pepper triangle in three groups
Pepper with three instead of two: the ball does not go back and forth but around, so there is always a real setter in the middle. For players who still have to get used to setting, this drill produces more sets in ten minutes than a whole session of game play.
Phase 1 of 5Three triangles of three players, each group with a ball
This animation comes straight out of the Koach app. In the app you play it at your own pace and the positions carry your players' real names.

What you are training
Pepper in triangles: pass, set and a hit ball within each group of three; nine players train ball control at the same time.
- Setting off a pass that is not perfect, with the ball arriving from a different direction every time.
- Controlling an attack on a teammate standing close by.
- Rotating roles, so everybody spends time in the middle too.
Coaching points
Setter: turn your feet toward the hitter before you touch the ball.
Setting with your torso twisted open under the ball is the reason the set consistently ends up behind the hitter.
The pass goes to the setter, not 'somewhere up'.
A precise target turns this game into a passing drill straight away. Without a target the first ball trains nothing.
Hit from a standing position, but with a full arm swing.
Hitting under control is not the same as taking half a swing. The movement has to be right; only the power gets dialled down.
Rotate every round, even when it is going well.
Groups that stay put because the rally is flowing end up with three specialists instead of three complete players.
Variations
- Easier
- The hitter catches the ball and throws it back instead of hitting it.
- Harder
- The hitter may tip or hit to the side, so the first player really has to dig.
- With six players
- Two triangles, or one group of six with two players in each corner and somebody joining in after every ball.
- As a game
- Which group of three makes the most complete cycles in two minutes? Only cycles with a pass, a set and an attack count.
