Categorising drills: attack, defence, serving, blocking

Fifty drills without categories is a pile; fifty drills with them is a library. The difference is ten seconds of discipline when creating each one — and it pays off every week.

The categories that work

Koach uses a classification that matches how coaches think: attack, defence, serving, passing, blocking, warm-up, game play, teamwork and other. That list covers virtually every drill — and in edge cases it forces you to choose what the drill contributes to most.

Choose by goal, not by appearance

The classic pitfall: classifying a drill by what you see instead of what it trains. A pass-and-attack drill that includes serving is a passing drill if the pass is the learning goal. Ask yourself for every drill: which skill am I correcting here as a coach? That is the category.

Drill library with category filters: all, attack, defence, serving, passing, blocking, warm-up
One tap on a filter and you only see what you are looking for — plus what a category is missing.

The filter as a mirror

Categories are not just search convenience: they are your planning mirror. Filter on blocking and see three drills, while attack has fourteen? Then you know where your library — and probably your practice — is one-sided. Combine that insight with your practice focus and the gaps fill themselves.

One main category per drill. Filing everything under two or three categories feels complete, but makes filtering meaningless. Pick the most important one; the description tells the rest.

Frequently asked questions

What do I do with game-like drills that combine everything?

That is what the 'game play' category is for: scrimmage formats with adjusted scoring. If the scoring revolves around one skill (every ace counts double), consider the category of that skill after all.

Can I invent my own categories?

Stick to a fixed set — the power of categories is predictability. Nuances like 'youth' or 'small group' belong in the name or description, where you can search for them.

How do I fix a messy library?

One clean-up evening: go through everything, re-categorise by learning goal and delete what you no longer run. Fifty drills cost you an hour — after that every filter works again.
