How high does a volleyball net hang? All net heights
Two meters forty-three. Anyone who ever stood in front of a men's net as an average-height attacker knows how high that really is. But the volleyball net comes in many more settings than that one: from 2.24 meters for women to 2.00 meters for the youngest players. These are all the official net heights — and how to measure them properly.
The official net heights for seniors
The FIVB and the Dutch federation use the same standard: for men the net hangs at 2.43 meters, for women at 2.24 meters. That height is measured in the middle of the net, from the floor to the top of the band. At the sides, above the sidelines, the net may hang at most 2 centimeters higher than in the middle — a net sags a little in the middle after all — but the two ends must be equally high.
These heights apply to all senior competitions, from the top division to the lowest regional class. Mixed recreational leagues usually agree on an in-between height too (often 2.35 meters), but that is a local arrangement, not an official rule.
Net heights for youth (Dutch federation)
For youth competition the Dutch federation lowers the net per age category, and for the B and C youth also per class:
- Boys A: 2.43 m (same as men)
- Girls A and girls B (higher classes): 2.24 m
- Boys B: 2.30 m in the highest classes; 2.24 m in the lower classes
- Girls B (lower classes): 2.15 m
- Youth C: 2.15 m in the highest classes; 2.10 m in the lower classes
Always check the current regulations for your region and class: the exact breakdown varies per season. The idea behind it is constant: the net grows along with the players, so that attacking and blocking are both achievable and instructive at every age.
CMV and mini volleyball: 2.00 meters
In CMV volleyball (Cool Moves Volley, the Dutch format for children up to and including age 12), the net hangs at 2.00 meters on all six levels. The court is smaller too — depending on the level, for example 6 by 4.5 or 6 by 6 meters. Beach volleyball: same height, different surface

Sitting volleyball: the lowest net
For completeness: in sitting volleyball, the Paralympic variant, the net hangs at 1.15 meters for men and 1.05 meters for women, above a court of 10 by 6 meters. Players must keep their torso in contact with the floor while playing the ball, which makes the low net height fit exactly with the reach from a seated position.
Why those few centimeters matter so much
At a glance the difference between 2.24 and 2.30 meters seems negligible, but at the net every centimeter is felt. An attacker who contacts the ball ten centimeters above the band instead of on it can suddenly hit over the block instead of into it; a blocker whose wrists just clear the band becomes passable with six centimeters extra. That is exactly why the Dutch federation uses that fine-grained youth table: on a net that hangs too high, children learn to safely 'push' the ball over it instead of really spiking — and that habit is hard to train out later. A net cut to size teaches young players the correct, attacking arm swing right away.
How to hang the net at the right height
- Tension the net tight — a sagging net cannot be measured reliably.
- Measure in the middle of the court, from floor to the top of the white band, with a measuring rod or stick (a tape that bends is inaccurate).
- Check both sidelines: there the net may be at most 2 cm higher than in the middle, and both sides must be equal.
- Set the antennas exactly above the outer edge of the sidelines — they mark the space within which the ball may cross the net.
Tip for coaches: if you are coaching a youth team that moves up a class next season, hang the net at the new height every now and then in the second half of the season. Attackers get used to the few extra centimeters playfully — that saves frustration in September.
