Volleyball tryout app: score tryout day, then build your teams

The short answer

A volleyball tryout app lets several evaluators score players on your own criteria and then ranks them; SkillShark and TeamGenius do that. Koach has no scoring module for tryout day. With Koach Club you place the players into teams afterwards, as a draft first, and follow them all season.

You are looking for a volleyball tryout app because tryouts (or trials, as plenty of clubs call them) are coming up and last year's stack of clipboard sheets is still stuffed in a bag somewhere. Here is what an app like that needs to do, which apps handle the scoring on the day itself, and where Koach Club comes in: with placing players into teams afterwards.

What should a volleyball tryout app do?

At tryouts, two or three people are watching a gym full of players at once, usually with a number on every shirt and a clipboard on their lap. An app should make that job lighter, not add one more screen someone is staring at while the drill keeps running. Look for six things:

Also ask who can see the scores. These are often evaluations of minors, and they do not belong in a list the whole team or every parent can open.

Volleyball tryout apps that score players on tryout day

We make Koach, so read this as a comparison from an interested party and check the other apps yourself. Koach has no module for scoring at tryouts; the two apps below do. Everything about SkillShark and TeamGenius comes from their own websites and the App Store, checked in October 2026.

SkillShark is an athlete evaluation app for tryouts, camps and evaluations, with a dedicated volleyball page. You build your own evaluation templates, evaluators score on iOS or Android, and according to the App Store listing the scores land in a web dashboard where you compare them by position and skill and then form teams. According to its pricing page, SkillShark is free for up to 25 players, one group, one evaluation event and two evaluators. Above that you pay $5, $10 or $15 per player per year, depending on the plan. Weighted reports come with the first paid plan, and the middle plan also tracks attendance and player progress.

TeamGenius is player evaluation software with a mobile scoring app for volleyball tryouts. You start from a ready-made template or create your own criteria, scales and weighting. According to the App Store listing, coaches score in the mobile app and the results go straight to a web portal, where you view the player rankings and build teams. The pricing page lists annual plans from $1,050 for up to 150 players, with unlimited evaluators and team-building tools. You can try it for 14 days with up to 20 players.

Paper and a spreadsheet cost nothing and work in any gym. Every evaluator fills in a form, someone types it all up that night and adds up the totals. That costs you an evening and typos creep in, but for picking one team with two evaluators it is often enough.

If you want to score digitally on the day with three or four evaluators and have a ranking that same evening, SkillShark or TeamGenius is the better choice. For a small tryout with no more than 25 players and two evaluators, SkillShark costs you nothing. Their prices are in US dollars.

What Koach does and does not do at tryouts

To be upfront: Koach has no tryout module. There is no screen where evaluators score players by number, and no automatic ranking comes out at the end of tryouts. On the day itself you work with the form, on paper or in one of the apps above. How to set up that day, with the schedule, the drill blocks and the evaluators, is covered in how to run volleyball tryouts.

Koach comes in afterwards, in two places. In Koach Club you place the players into teams, in a draft where nothing moves yet. And in every team you rate players with stars after practice all season long, so the next tryout does not hinge on a single evening.

After tryouts: placing players into teams in Koach Club

Team selection lives in the club section of Koach and is part of the Club plan. You open it from your profile via the Club dashboard. It is only available to the club manager and board members. That means the level you set for a player is only visible to them: not to players, not to parents, not to coaches without a club role, and not to the other club roles either.

  1. Start a selection. Tap New selection and give it a name. Copy teams adds this season's teams as groups straight away; you add a new team with Add a team.
  2. Turn the results into a level. Tick the players who were roughly equally strong at tryouts, tap Level and choose Beginner, Some experience, Advanced or Top squad. Above the list you can then filter by level and by the team someone plays on now.
  3. Place them. Tick several players, tap Place in… and choose the group. Anyone you have not placed yet stays visible under Not placed yet.
  4. Compare options side by side. Torn between two ways to split the teams? Another draft starts a second version, empty or as a copy of the first. With Share you send a selection as text to the meeting or the group chat.
  5. Make it final. Only when you tap Make final do players actually move to their new team. Only a club manager or board member can do this, and it cannot be undone. A player's numbers go with them: the new coach sees them under Previously with other teams.

From your profile you open the Club dashboard. That is where the Team selection tab is, for the club manager and the board.

One thing to know beforehand: Team selection works with your club's members, and those are first and foremost the players on the club's teams. A player who is not on any of the club's teams yet has to be added to a team as a player by a coach first; after that they show up in the selection too. How drafts work is explained in building your team placement for the new season, and what exactly happens in the last step in making the team placement final.

A player evaluation app for the rest of the season

Tryouts are one evening. What a player does with their chance only shows weeks later. For that, every team in Koach has a rating after practice, on the Coach plan too: you tap the name of a player who was there and give one to five stars for Technique, Game awareness, Coachability, Work ethic and Effort. The app shows the average next to the name.

Practice attendance in the Koach app with present, late or absent for each player and an average star rating
After practice you tap a name and give stars on five points; the average appears next to the player.

Over a season those stars turn into a trend line. In the player profile, under Development, the Training rating is shown as a line with the points per match below it, and under Season-over-season growth you see points and attendance for each season. Players cannot see your notes about them. So at the next tryout you have more than one evening to go on for your own players. How to track development more broadly than with stars alone is covered in tracking player development. You do not tick off individual skills in the app; if you want to track what a player can already do at each level, use a volleyball skills checklist alongside the app.

Who Koach Club is for, and who it is not for

It is a good fit for a club that has to fill several teams after tryouts and does that together with the board or the technical committee: one team placement instead of spreadsheets emailed back and forth, and the same app for practices, matches and attendance afterwards. It also fits if you mostly re-place your own members. If they were already in Koach last season, their coaches bring that season's stars and points to the meeting.

It is not a good fit if you want to score digitally on the day with multiple evaluators and get an automatic ranking; go with SkillShark or TeamGenius, or the paper form. If you coach one team and only want to rate your own players, you do not need Team selection: the stars after practice are included in Coach too.

Club costs €9.99 per month, or €8.33 per month on a yearly plan, for unlimited teams and coaches. Players and parents use Koach for free. Club has no free trial: use the form on the clubs page to book an intro call. Coach, for one team, costs €2.99 per month and you can try it free for 14 days. All prices are on the pricing page; in the App Store and on Google Play you pay the store price in your own currency.

Agree before tryouts which result maps to which level. Decide which outcome on the form makes someone Advanced or Top squad. Then after tryouts you can set the levels in Team selection without reopening the debate, and the meeting only has to deal with the borderline cases.

Frequently asked questions

Does Koach have a volleyball tryout app?

No. Koach has no screen for scoring players at tryouts and no automatic ranking. On the day itself you work with an evaluation form or with an app built for it, such as SkillShark or TeamGenius. Koach Club comes in afterwards: you place the players into teams in a draft, give them a level and make the selection final. In every team you then rate players with stars after practice.

Is there a free volleyball tryout app?

According to its own pricing page, SkillShark is free for up to 25 players, one group, one evaluation event and two evaluators (checked in October 2026). TeamGenius offers a 14-day trial with up to 20 players. A paper evaluation form costs nothing at all. Koach has no tryout module, and Club has no free trial: you book an intro call through the clubs page.

Who can build the team selection in Koach?

Team selection is part of the Club plan and is only available to the club manager and board members. Coaches without a club role and the other club roles, such as treasurer or technical manager, cannot open it. That keeps the levels you set for players, often minors, with the people building the selection. Make final, the step that actually moves players to their new team, is also limited to the club manager or a board member.

How much does Koach Club cost?

Club costs €9.99 per month, or €8.33 per month if you pay yearly, with unlimited teams and coaches. Players and parents use the app for free. Club has no free trial; you book an intro call through the form on the clubs page and we set up the club together with you. If you coach one team, Coach costs €2.99 per month and you can try it free for 14 days first.

Do a player's stats move with them to their new team?

Yes. When you make the selection final, the player moves with their numbers. The new coach sees them in the player profile under Previously with other teams, and notes about the player move along too. So the new coach does not start from zero, and at the next tryout there is more to go on than the impression of one evening.
