Sports attendance app: TeamSnap, Spond, Heja and more compared
The short answer
A good sports attendance app lets players say whether they're coming, reminds anyone who hasn't answered and adds up attendance per player. Spond, Heja, TeamSnap and Teamcheck each cover part of that, for any sport and sometimes only on a paid plan. If you coach volleyball, Koach ties attendance to your practices and matches.
You're looking for a sports attendance app because the group chat has stopped working: half the team never replies, and whoever drops out tells you an hour before practice. We make Koach, an app for volleyball coaches, so read this as a comparison written by an interested party. About the other apps we only report what their App Store and Google Play listings say.
What should a sports attendance app do?
A group chat tells you who replied, not who's actually coming. So check every attendance app on five things:
- Players opt out themselves, with a reason. Players, or on youth teams their parents, mark themselves out. Then you don't have to chase anyone.
- More than yes or no. A player who turns up late was still there. An app with only yes and no will never show you who walks in fifteen minutes late every week.
- Reminders for anyone who hasn't replied. A nudge for whoever hasn't answered yet, early enough for you to still change the plan.
- Attendance per player that adds itself up. After ten weeks you want to see who has been missing, at practices and at matches, without tallying by hand.
- What it costs. Does the coach pay, the team, or nobody? And is attendance tracking locked behind an upgrade?
How to keep track of attendance day to day, with or without an app, is covered in tracking attendance at volleyball practice without the hassle, and if you'd rather start on paper, there is a free volleyball attendance sheet in PDF and Excel. This article is about choosing the app.
14 days free, no credit card. Add your volleyball team tonight, have everyone RSVP for the next practice and know who's coming before you walk into the gym.

The table shows what each maker says about attendance in its own listing. Anything the listing doesn't mention, we leave out; an app can do more than its description says.

What the other apps do well
Teamcheck: statuses instead of yes or no
Teamcheck: Sports Attendance is built entirely around attendance. Its listing sets a real status, such as present, late, sick, injured or on vacation, against the usual yes, no or maybe. Every check-in counts toward personal attendance stats and a team leaderboard, and there's also a group chat and fee management. The app is free and ad free; you only need Pro once you have more than 20 members or more admins. A strong pick for a coach in any sport who wants to know exactly why someone was not there. The App Store lists English as its only language.
Spond: free, with payments built in
Spond is free and, according to the App Store, available in 24 languages. You see who's coming because the app keeps track of replies to invitations, and you can export attendance lists to Excel. On top of that you collect membership fees and event payments, and you talk to the team through group chats and polls. For a club that wants to collect fees through the app, Spond does something Koach doesn't. What Spond is missing for a volleyball team is covered in the Spond alternative for volleyball.
TeamSnap: big, but availability sits in a paid plan
TeamSnap has been in the App Store since 2010 and claims more than 25 million users in 196 countries there. Scheduling, availability, rosters and chat are all included, for hundreds of sports, volleyball among them. Do check what you're paying for, though: according to the listing, team chat and scheduling are free, while availability, player stats and shared media sit in the paid Premium and Ultra plans, which you can try first. The App Store lists English, French and Spanish, and Google Play notes that the app contains ads.
Erbij: replies without an app
Erbij, a Dutch app, revolves around one question per activity: are you in? You invite people through WhatsApp and they can reply without installing the app; giving a reason is optional. You can easily send a reminder to everyone who hasn't replied yet, see when someone changed their answer and cap the number of participants. A good fit for a rec team or a regular group where not everyone wants yet another app. The listing doesn't mention an attendance overview per player. The app is available in Dutch and English.
Heja: reminders and messages
Heja is all about availability and automatic reminders. According to the listing, the app keeps the coach in the loop when someone is sick, running late or away, and reminds players and parents to respond. Heja is free for everyone on the team, with no limit on the number of players and parents. Attendance stats, payment tracking and more advanced reminders are part of Heja Pro, an in-app purchase. The App Store listing mentions English only.
How attendance works in Koach
Koach isn't an attendance app for every sport. It's an app for volleyball coaches, and attendance is one part of it. You notice that in what comes next: on the same screen you give everyone who showed up an effort score, and badges such as Never Late and Iron Will grow out of the attendance you track.
- Players RSVP themselves. For every practice and match they tap I'm coming or Can't make it. When they drop out, the app asks Why can’t you make it?, with a reason in their own words that is optional. For a match there's also I'm coming to watch, and with Sign up for all sessions a player signs up for every upcoming practice in one tap. Parents can mark their child out from their own free account.
- You record who was really there. At practice you mark each player Present, Late or Absent, or you tap All present and only change the exceptions. How attendance and effort work together is explained in the attendance app for volleyball.
- Reminders. In the iPhone and Android app the Day-before reminder comes in, and anyone who still hasn't responded two days ahead gets a single nudge; see the reminder to sign up for practice. With the Attendance in your teams notification, you hear as the coach when someone drops out.
- History. The clock icon on a practice shows who signed up or dropped out and when, and whether that was the player, a parent or the coach.
Attendance per player: practices and matches kept apart
Whatever you tick off at each practice, Koach adds up for you. A player's profile has a training overview with how often they came, their average effort and their attendance rate, and below it a match overview with an attendance rate of its own. The two are separate on purpose: a player who comes to every practice but often misses match day doesn't vanish into one average. Match attendance only counts matches where it's known who played.
So you don't need to work anything out to show a player or a parent how the season went. If the numbers are disappointing, read how to increase practice attendance.
Who Koach is for, and who it isn't for
Koach fits if you coach a volleyball team and want attendance in the same place where you run your practices, lineups and matches, on iPhone, iPad, Android or in the browser. Pick another app if one of these matters more to you:
- You coach a different sport. Everything in Koach assumes indoor volleyball, six on six.
- You want statuses like sick or vacation. Teamcheck has those. In Koach the player gives a reason in their own words, and the coach sets an injury as a status on the player.
- You want to collect fees through the app. Spond collects fees and Teamcheck keeps track of them. Koach doesn't send or receive money.
- You're after a group chat. Koach has no chat, but it does have announcements, polls and tasks.
- Nobody wants another app. With Erbij your players reply through WhatsApp without installing anything. In Koach a player or parent drops out with their own free account, in the app or in the browser, and push notifications only arrive in the iPhone and Android app.
Torn between an app for every sport and an app made for volleyball? Run through the checklist for choosing a volleyball app for coaches.
How much does a sports attendance app cost?
Five of the six apps can be used without paying; the difference is in what you pay extra for. According to their listings, availability on TeamSnap sits in a paid plan, Heja keeps its attendance stats in Heja Pro, and Teamcheck only charges above 20 members.
You can try Koach free for 14 days, with no credit card and every feature. After that you choose Coach for €2.99 per month (one team, two coaches) or Club for €9.99 per month (unlimited teams and coaches). On a yearly plan you pay €2.49 or €8.33 per month. Players and parents pay nothing. The prices are on the pricing page; in the App Store and on Google Play you see the price in your own currency.
Start with one month of RSVPs only. Have your team sign up and drop out through the app for four weeks before you talk about attendance numbers. Then the overview rests on real data, not on that first week when not everyone had joined yet.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a free sports attendance app?
Yes. Spond, Heja and Erbij are free to use, Teamcheck is free up to 20 members and TeamSnap costs nothing to start, although according to its listing availability tracking sits in a paid plan. On Heja the attendance stats need a Pro subscription. Koach is an app for volleyball coaches: you can try it free for 14 days with no credit card, and after that Coach costs €2.99 per month. Players and parents pay nothing. Checked in October 2026.
Can players mark themselves absent in the app and give a reason?
In Koach they can: a player taps Can't make it and the app asks Why can’t you make it?, with an optional reason in their own words. Parents can mark their child out. On Erbij a reason is optional too, and people can reply through WhatsApp without the app. Teamcheck works with fixed statuses such as sick, injured and vacation. On Spond, Heja and TeamSnap players reply to an invitation or set their availability. That's what their App Store listings say, checked in October 2026.
How do you remind players who don't respond?
Choose an app that does it for you. According to the App Store (checked in October 2026), Heja sends automatic reminders and asks players and parents to respond, and on Erbij you send a reminder to everyone who hasn't replied yet. In the iPhone and Android app, Koach sends a reminder the day before, plus a single nudge two days ahead to anyone who hasn't answered. In the browser you don't get push notifications.
Can I track attendance for each player?
In Koach every player's profile has a training overview with how often they came, their average effort and their attendance rate, and below it a separate match overview. You don't add anything up yourself: every practice you tick off counts. According to the App Store (checked in October 2026), Teamcheck mentions personal attendance stats, Heja puts attendance stats in Heja Pro and Spond exports attendance lists to Excel.
Does Koach work for soccer, basketball or other sports?
No. Koach is made for indoor volleyball: the lineup, the rotations and live scoring all assume six on six. For another sport you'd be paying for features you don't use. If you coach soccer, hockey or basketball, look at Spond, Heja, TeamSnap, Teamcheck or Erbij; they aren't tied to one sport and also track who's coming.
