The complete 28-week adult volleyball practice plan

28 sessions For Adult 90 minutes per session 114 drills

Twenty-eight is the whole adult catalogue: every session, once, in order. It is the only version where no phase is a sample of a longer one and no block has been traded for another. At ninety minutes a night that is roughly forty-two hours on court, which is what one training night a week gives a club side across a full season.

What that length buys is the last phase. Sessions twenty-five to twenty-eight teach nothing new: serving to a plan, rallies at match tempo, the last five points of a set, and three full sets with real substitutions. They exist to put finished material under a score. Every shorter version is still teaching on its final evening; this one has stopped, and spends four nights finding out what actually holds.

Where this block fits in a season

Plan this one backwards. Session twenty-eight is a match simulation and session twenty-seven is the endgame, so both want fixtures still to come — put them in the run-in, not after it. Count twenty-eight usable evenings back from the last match that matters and that is your starting week, which for most club sides means being on court well before the opening fixture. Session one is a measured baseline rather than a fitness week, so it belongs on court with balls out, whatever the pre-season schedule says about running.

What you see at the end

By session twenty-eight the plan stops teaching and starts asking. Three sets to fifteen, real rotations, real substitutions, and your coaching confined to the breaks between them. The tells are small ones. A server still picks a zone at 23-all rather than putting it safely in. Somebody says the score out loud before the serve. Nobody looks at the bench mid-rally. Twenty-eight evenings do not buy a better arm swing than sixteen do; what they buy is a team that has already been to 24-all on a Tuesday.

Questions coaches ask

We play a match most weekends. Why spend four evenings on serving plans and endgames?

Because a match gives you the last five points once, if at all, and never on demand. Session twenty-seven puts the squad at 22-all three times in an hour, with wash scoring on top. Session twenty-five asks for a serving plan held for a whole set. You cannot rehearse either on a Saturday; you can only find out you have not.

Every session ends with a number. Do we have to hit all twenty-eight?

No. Treat them as readings, not gates. On a plan this long almost every standard comes back under harder conditions — serve receive per rotation is set in session twenty-two and checked again in twenty-eight, transition is measured in eighteen and run at tempo in twenty-six. Note a miss, carry it forward, and let the later session settle it.

We often train with nine or ten. Does the second half of the plan still run?

The technical half works with eight. From session seventeen the drills take a six-on-six shape, so numbers start to matter. Nine or ten still covers most of it — the serve duel is six on five, the complete rally five on five. Sessions twenty-two, twenty-three and twenty-eight put six against six and want a full squad. Put those on the nights you know you will have one.
